Sep 21, 2012 9:50 AM in response to jfkornby sgoldhorn,I'd probably bring my phone into an Apple store to let a "Genius" try and fix it too IF:
1. It were convenient. Both in location and the fact that today is iPhone 5 launch day. An Apple retail store is the last place on earth I'd want to be on launch day.
2. I thought that the "Genius" folks knew a solution to this problem anymore than I do. It's clear that they have no clue.

Sep 21, 2012 11:31 AM in response to durbie73by c_lou,My wifi on my iphone 4 was having problems under IOS 5. It kept dropping. I did a network restore. Worked....for a couple minutes. Then dropped. This happened for a day or so. Then my iphone couldn't find any networks. I manually put my router name and password in, 'cannot read networks' it said. My system notates my router information, it just cannot search for them. I decided to upgrade to ios 6 hoping this would solve the problem. Now I've got the grey out. Awesome. System restore...nothing. My husband's iphone (ios 3), my ipod (ios 3), and my inlaws ipad ALL work fine. I tried to follow steps to revert back to ios 5, but I couldn't find the data on my laptop (only computer I use). If I cannot get this resolved, I may have to go to the Apple Store on Monday, but I would wait if Apple put out a statement with some sort of timeline. I can only be patient for so long. Is it possible that an itunes application not quite working with ios 5 or 6 is interfering with this and creating a bug? I recently updated my apps. I am at least glad that enough people are having this same problem, that something may get done quicker. If not, a lot of ****** off people are going to ditch Apple. Please fix this glitch!!

Mr. Hodge, this line is of particular interest to me:
In the second instance the issue SHOULD be fixed by Apple in a future iOS update, though the fact they've known about this bug since June and haven't bothered fixing it yet shows you how low a priority this is so don't hold your breath for iOS 6.0.1 to come out tomorrow.
What proof do you have that Apple knew about the Wi-Fi disable issue???
Per my previous post in this thread, I raised a bug with Apple on 11 June:
Bug ID #: 11641904
Bug Title: iOS 6 iPhone 4S WiFi is Disabled
-------------------------------------------------------
<GMT11-Jun-2012 23:41:01GMT> James Hodge:
Summary: After updating an iPhone 4S to iOS 6 (10A5316k), WiFi is no longer available.
The bug was closed within a few days as a Duplicate, which is what happens when someone else has already raised the bug and the Engineering team is aware of the issue.
If you're in doubt, take the Bug Reporter number I quoted previously in this thread and ask an Apple tech / Genius to look at that reference in the bugreport.apple.com system.

Sep 22, 2012 1:42 AM in response to Mattressmanby AlexSinger,Hey, that worked for me to!
Stopped all running apps.
Powered down for 2 minutes

WiFi is back on
I had also removed the Onavo Extend data shrink profile from my phone first. Don't know if that had anything to do with it.
Hope you all come right
P.S. The new map app still *****!!

Sep 22, 2012 3:29 AM in response to Trapdoresothby soni991,I am wondering I paid Money to buy this Phone. This is my property , why does apple screw my cell phone and cause me so much trouble? My phone was perfect the day prior to launch of IOS6, i have job where my cell is required lot work on internet that too through WIFI. But after update to this crap IOS6 my WIFI is greyedOut and now i am paying GPRS charges of about .01ct / kb thats equal too 1 RMB / mb and each time i surf the web or download my emails it cost me alomst 10-15rmb(2-2.2USD) in one shot. Also the signal is poor cause the email to work very slow on network. WHY do i have to suffer for the technician, enginers, coders, programers mistake. OR i had done mistake buying this phone rather then buying Samsung Galaxy III. Can i lodge some serious case against them for causing me this serious trouble.

Sep 22, 2012 4:28 AM in response to Trapdoresothby redlegoman,Just to add my 2 pence, I also have an iPhone 4S which also has this problem. I've been through every combination of restores and resets that Apple telephone support could come up with to no avail.
I have downgraded and upgraded between iOS 5.1.1 and iOS 6 four times now and everytime the result is the same : on iOS 5.1.1 the wifi works perfectly, on iOS 6 the wifi is greyed our and inoperable.
Mine is a MD242B, almost 12 months old now (I bought it on release day).
I'm taking it with iOS 6 installed to the Apple store tomorrow, hopefully for a replacement.

Sep 22, 2012 8:08 AM in response to Trapdoresothby NYIndian,After having tried everything indicated here, I spend time with Apple Care and they directed to me the Store. The friendly "genius" in Montreal (where I was this week) took one look and after I mentioned that I have even tried DFU + restore, he replaced the phone. Am I happy or what with iOS 5.1.1 + Google Maps?
So, my suggestion is to close this thread and those who have "greyed out wifi" swtich, get the phone replaced - there is no remedy at this point.

Sep 22, 2012 1:22 PM in response to NYIndianby mpm32,Well verizon told me to take it to the Apple store. I took it in they did a reset, no go. He comes out and tells me the wifi card is fried.
So he set me up with a new phone running 5.1.1. I'd like to run iOS 6 but maybe I'll wait a little while and see if anyone else has issued on their replacement phone.

Sep 22, 2012 1:37 PM in response to mpm32by EnigmaNemesis,Card isn't fried. That is company spin. It is an issue with the OS and they are not admitting to it. They will quietly release an update and act like it never happened.
Unfortunately Apple blocked the firmware downgrade.

Sep 23, 2012 12:40 AM in response to EnigmaNemesisby martin282,I can't understand why there is still no hotfix to iOS 6.0, because nobody can me explain why the WLAN switch goes to be inactive exactly after the upgrade to 6.0 on a new iPhone 4S. Further why does Apple not allow to downgrade to the official iOS 5.1.1? If yes they would have time to solve iOS 6 problems. When i read in this forum and in Google it seems the WLAN problem is not the only one.
