Home sharing not working in iOS 6

Using ipad 3. I've tried everything including rebooting and resetting my settings and Apple ID. Cannot get it to work, it recognizes that a home shared library is available but will not download it, get "cannot turn on home sharing" in music and just stalls with a 2/3 shadowed circle in videos. Yet, all works fine on the iPhone 4's, iPad 2 and iPad 1 on same wifi network.

I've had no problem to my knowledge with wifi.

There are a few other issues too, but I'm hoping Apple will have a quick solution for all???

I had a lot of the same issues. XP host sharing iTunes library. AppleTV accesses it fine, iPhone as well. iPad can't since ios6.

Tried a lot of the suggestions here, no luck sadly. Tried a lot of things with iTunes, my router, my network adapter on my PC. Nothing worked.

Out of desperation, I just tried the following: Go to "Settings", then "General," go to "Reset", then "Reset Network Settings."

Success!

After weeks I can finally access my Shared Library again.

Good luck!

SOLUTION that worked for me. Hope it helps someone else.

Problem: After upgrading to iOS6 and the latest iTunes, home sharing stopped working on my iPhone4. I got caught with both the 1/3 filled circle and nothing and the wait forever (it finally finishes) and only a small fraction was available for streaming.

I did both things, so I'm uncertain if it's one or the other, but it's worth a try.

Solution:

  1. As stated above, go into iPhone's "Settings" -> "General" -> "Reset" -> "Reset Network Settings."

Not sure what this does, but it will remove all of your saved Wi-Fi networks, so you'll have to re-enter the info.

  2. As on pg 12 of this forum sign in and sign out of Home Sharing on both iTunes & iPhone
    1. On iTunes "File" -> "Home Sharing" -> "Turn Off/On Home Sharing"
    2. Sign Out or Sign In. (if signing out, I would close and restart iTunes befre re-enabling it)
    3. On iPhone "Settings" -> "Music" -> "Home Sharing"
      1. If you are signed in already, just hit the ID and hit "Sign Out"
      2. To sign in just enter your credentials and wait a minute.

As a note, I think I reset the network settings on my phone after I signed out of Home Sharing on the phone. Not sure if the order makes a difference, but now homesharing works again.

I've had the same issues with my itunes library I thought it was because the library was quite large but no it's a cashing issue to fix my shared library problems I signed out of home sharing on the device iphone and ipad open music to check shared has gone the close music and open the multitask bar and close music and everything else aswell from there next hold the lock and home button and force shutdown the device keep holding the buttons until the apple comes and goes away leave the device for a couple of minutes then restart when the device has restarted open music to check no shared library is there if its not there open settings and log back into home sharing next go to general and switch device lock to never open music and try your shared library this has worked for me on more than one occasion something to bear in mind my itunes library all 800 Gb in on a windows home server 2011 now I've resolved this issue my phones and iPads all connect to my library my apple tvs have not been affected

Hi Tim, after 1.5days of struggling to get Home Sharing working on my iPad running iOS6 and a lot of frustration - having tried out all sorts of resets, your suggestion has made Home Sharing work for the first time on my iPad. I reset my WiFi connection per your suggestion and voila - after all the other resets and updating of iTunes to the latest (iTunes11) on my Windows laptop, I'm able to get Home Sharing to work, all playlists showing up. Am not sure if this good behavior will persist, will keep everyone posted. On the other hand, Home Sharing worked straight off the box on my wife's iPhone4 running iOS5. Something seems to be seriously wrong with the Home Sharing feature on iOS6!!! Thanks a ton.

Unfortunately I suspect it won't last. After a while it will start struggling to connect quickly. Playlists will corrupt, artists go missing and TV shows will mess up with wrong cover art etc. after a while cache corrupts on ios 6. It can be fixed with a combo of signing out of home sharing, restarting iTunes and the iphone/iPad which I think forces a cache rebuild. Basically apple refuse to accept the issue or see it as a total low priority (whilst I see this as a major feature). It's one of the many things apple broke with ios6. Lets hope they bothered to look at it with ios7. I would rather home sharing worked properly than apple add a new accent to Siri or a fancy font to passbook

Etc. I don't want insignificant new features if they break existing ones!

I have an iPad2 running iOS 6.1.3 (10B329). I select More/Shared/<library name>. After a while (I have 12K song library), the library shows up. I select any song and play and it instantly skips to the next song. I tried all the tricks in this thread: signing out of HS and signing back in; restarting iTunes on the PC that is sharing the library I want to use; remove all music from the iPad to give it lots of available memory; rebooting the iPad (power and home button pressed until Apple logo appears); turning off IPv6.

None of these solutions work

Apple, what are you doing to fix this problem? 13 pages of customers tyring to get your product to work and not a peep or a solution in sight. What gives?

Hi All,

FWIW, I've been working with Developer Previews and entered a bug for this back in December January 2013:

Bug ID #: 12929308

Bug Title: Video Controls Unresponsive During Home Sharing Playback

The bug was never addressed, but was marked as "Duplicate" back then. Well, today, I installed iOS7, Beta 6 -- and it is working on my iPad for the first time in almost a year (when I first installed iOS6). So, I guess you can either join the Apple Developer program to get iOS7 or wait for it to GA in several weeks.

Hope some of you find this useful.

I've had iOS7 for 24hrs. Brace yourself.

The good news is, that for the first time since iOS6 my iPad3 lists all the home share music.

The bad news is that it hasn't played a single song. It just sits there with the song in the title. Or in the case of an album jumps to the next song every split second.

In the few times I've played with it, I've had half a dozen crashes and found numerous omissions/regressions, glitches, ... too many to list here, and off topic.

Anyhow. I hoped iOS7 would fix my home sharing issue and it doesn't.

OK. I just double tapped home. Swiped up to kill music. Restarted the iPad. Accessed the shared library fine (and very fast) through the remote app. Came back to the music app, connect to share and hallelujah, it plays music now!

I have no idea what is different today at lunch, than yesterday. The host system wasn't touched. I can only surmise that it was choking somewhere initially in getting the library index and maybe chewing through the data? But interestingly enough remote never has that problem.

Hopefully they will fix genre count and some other glitches soon.

But, at least I can use the music app now. What a relief.

I'd say it's better but not totally fine. Music home sharing seems fine. First time I tried video film and TV shows also fine. But later tried videos and just got the circle spin for ages. Subsequent attempts failed. I found if I force quit the video app then try again it will then work. Same happens with my iphone. No such issue using music app though as home sharing seems perfect and loads every time. Once video home sharing works it will be ok for a while but eventually the need to force quit to make it work arises. The good thing though is when it does load all the covers and art etc are in right place and no longer prone to jumbling! So I give it a seven out if ten. Good but still needs improving,

Hate to say it but I think home sharing is worse. When I first open music home sharing everything is fine BUT if I then close the music app, go to video home share and then return to music and click on a song to play all that happens is it runs through all the songs on the album at lightning speed and fails to play anything. Only way to get it to work again is to fully close the music app, restart it and click on home share again. Apple really needs to fix this........or is this a ploy to get its customers to sign up to iTunes Match?????????
