Apr 3, 2013 12:19 PM in response to Phillip Gutierrezby BrenInVA,Try turning your phone off and then back on.
I had the same problem and tried going through the steps given by others for "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe", but this did not work for me.
I tried various things and finally called AppleCare. The first tech I spoke with had me uninstall iTunes and some other related things - mobile device support, update, Bonjour, etc. Then I downloaded iTunes again. I still had the same error code when I opened iTunes and connected my iPhone 5. I just kept getting the same error code (0xE80000084), again and again.
The technician transferred me to the next level of support (who was great, by the way) and he had me try a couple of things, and then asked if I had turned off my phone, which I had not.
I closed out iTunes, made sure the phone was not connected, and then turned off the phone. Believe it or not, turning off the phone, and then turning it back on, and then connecting the cable to the phone, seems to have solved the problem. The phone shows up now on the left side bar, the phone sync's and charges, and I have not had another error code, popping up.
So, hopefully this has solved my problem. If so, what a simple "hit yourself on the head, why did I not think to do this first", thing it is -- but so far, so good.

May 24, 2013 11:51 AM in response to Phillip Gutierrezby AlanPMatthews,I have found that killing all instances of ATH.exe, and then disconnecting and reconnectring the iPhone works just fine when this happens. 12 seconds or so.... still... come on Apple... I shouldn't have to do this and clearly a lot of people have this problem.
I've heard that disabling wifi sync will help but I've not tested that additional step.

Jul 10, 2013 2:02 PM in response to Phillip Gutierrezby Magicspringer,I am also receiving the same error message whilst trying to sort out my daughter's forgotten password on her iPod touch. I am not getting any of the dialogue boxes you are all mentioning when following the instructions. I have tried cyclists method but don't get the 'show processes from all users' when I open task manager. I am a complete technophobe but don't want to have to make an appt at the apple store.... PLEEEASE can anyone help?
