is it just me, or does it seem like there are a LOT of processes running behind that screen that we are unaware of?

Updating to iOS6 was the worst mistake I ever made with my iPhone 4s, the charge drops by 10% every hour of standby.

Best thing I've done. iOS 6 has GREATLY IMPROVED battery life for me.

Well if the feedback is so inconsistent - it means that it was NOT a solid update.

After every update in the past 5 years there have been reports of sudden loss of battery life. There have also been reports of sudden loss of battery life between updates. So the reasonable conclusion is that there is something that happens in the update process that can affect battery life, but that "something" can also happen randomly. No one has ever identified what the actual cause is, but it is suspected that it is an app that was sending data and was interrupted, and keeps retrying after the update or other cause of the interruption but continually fails. Sometimes running the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off, then charging for 4 hours with a wall charger fixes it. Sometimes deleting Push email accounts such as MS Exchange acccounts, rebooting, and adding them back fixes it. And frequently just waiting a day or two fixes it.

    Thanks for the advice!

I've tried everything from your list except for the deleting email accounts.

    Will report back.

However I don't use push for them.

I might also try backing up my device, resetting it and restoring the backup.

4S is running hotter and battery use is accelerated over iOS 5.1

OK - this is weird.  But since my first day with IOS 6 - the battery life is getting better (not near as good as it was pre-update).

Those first two days I had to keep a charger and battery pak handy (in standby). Now, after having my phone off the charger for 14 hours, and usual use and calls - it is at 56%....

Surely, it is not an intelligent adjustment within the software.....

I have a 4S and 5 and have no battery issues with either.

UPDATE:  My battery life seems to have stabilized.  I disconnected from a charger yesterday at 6pm and it is now 9:45am and I am at 48% with moderate user last night and some use this morning.

Well, in my opinion the battery life with iOS 6 on iPhone 4S is now much better!

1 % left and I have 8 hrs and 17 minutes usage and 1 day 7 hrs standby time. (I browsed the web, sent some E-Mails with pictures & received some text E-Mails, made some calls, used iMessage, Siri, Facebook, iCal, Contacts and other apps like Dropbox. Also I have 2 E-Mail accounts on "Push" and iCloud activated with all its features, except iCloud Mail and iTunes Match!)

With iOS 5.1.1 I hardly reached 6 hrs usage time.

My iPad 3 is considerably worse with ios 6 while my 3gs is no different.  The iPad is so bad I am considering reverting.  If that is possible.

It isn't possible without jailbreaking, so hopefully it gets better.  Are your calendars working?

The update was a nightmare for me to install.. Inorder for the update to take i had to wipe and restore my phone 2x. I don't think the update took properly as the font on the screen does not look the same as a friends and im missing some of the new aps that should have been installed... Batery life has drastically changed i used to get 2 days out of it and now im lucky to get one... Also my DL speed has gotten drastically slower both on wifi and 3G... need to figure out how to uninstall and start over.

I had enough of the battery drain and host of sound issues (music not playing through the speakers, no sounds on texts, emails, etc.) so I decided to wipe my phone and restore a back-up from earlier in the day.  I did this from my PC.  I had upgraded to iOS 6 via WiFi and some users have reported issues about this.

My battery issues have improved a bit since the wipe and restore.  I'm no longer draining at about 10% per hour on standby.  I'd say I'm now on par with what I was getting on iOS 5.  However, I'm still getting intermittent sound issues.  Not all of my incoming text messages have their alert sounds (just vibrate and my phone isn't on silent).  I also had some issues where music couldn't play from the speakers but it seems to work now.
