If his phone was jailbroken, it's toast.
my iphone 4 is the same way and it wasnt jail broken
Doesn't sound good. He said it isn't jailbroken, but, we did buy it 2nd-hand. 😟
Managed to get out of recovery & download the upgrade but now we can't activate the iphone & it doesn't detect the sim card.
how did u get it out of recovery mode
Connected it to Itunes on a different user on our computer & just kept restoring it. 3rd time was the charm. Still not working though. Won't activate the phone or recognize our sim card. 😟
Any time the phone doesn't recognize the sim, you should remove the sim, reseat it and reinstall it in the phone. If the phone was originally "jailbroken" the ios would undo that hack and now the phone will only work with the carrier that had the original lock. Unless of course you were to get it re jailbroken.
Since we weren't the original owner we have no idea who the carrier is that the phone is now locked to.
Had to have the phone unlocked again & set back to the older IOS.
I believe I just figured out a solution for my phone. I was wiping out an older iPhone 3gs and I kept going through the same loop of restoring the phone, and then seeing the same message when restore was complete.
My solution:
I unplugged the phone from iTunes, held down the top (power) button and the home button for about 10 seconds until the phone restarted (at which point it still had the plug-into-iTunes image), then I plugged the phone back into iTunes, did the restore one more time, and it now shows a "Welcome to your new iPhone" where you can restore from backup or set up as a new iPhone.
My home button & power button does not work and my phone is on recovery mode for more than 2 hours. What can I do in order for its to at least start as a new phone cause it says it can't connect to itunes as well?
When your iPhone 3gs stuck in recovery mode, try to put your iPhone into dfu mode:
1. Plug your iPhone into the computer and then hold the home and lock buttons for 10 seconds
2. After the 10 seconds release the lock button and wait until iTunes says "iTunes has detected a device in recovery mode"
3. If your device shows the "connect to iTunes logo restart the dfu mode process because it is in recovery mode
