Q: 10.8.2 spotlight indexing issue

Since updating to 10.8.2 I noticed that spotlight will randomly start indexing for a while and then stop. Basically everything IS already indexed because when I search in spotlight I got what I need but from time to time there will be indexing progress bar in the bottum of the spotlight dropdown menu, which is full but keeps rolling. I checked console.app and saw a lot of messages regarding mdworker, mdimporter and lsboxd like the following:

mdworker: Unable to talk to lsboxd

mdimporter: Unable to talk to lsboxd

sandboxd: mdworker(692) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd

I suspect that there might be some issue with spotlight and the sandbox mechanism? When I boot the computer I also notice that lsboxd keeps running in activity monitor, which wasn't the case prior to 10.8.2 update.

Has anyone seen the same symptom?

I'm on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with Crucial M4 SSD.

OS X Mountain Lion

Go to /System/Library/Sandbox/Profiles/ and there should be a file named "system.sb".

1 Make a backup of the original one and place somewhere safe on your harddisk.

2 Copy system.sb on the desktop to can edit.

3 Open it with a text editor and check for the block thext:

;;; Allow IPC to standard system agents.

    (allow mach-lookup

           (global-name "com.apple.bsd.dirhelper")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.logger")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.notification_center")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.opendirectoryd.libinfo")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.DirectoryService.libinfo_v1")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.opendirectoryd.membership")

           (global-name "com.apple.xpcd"))

4 Add these 2 lines (in bold), then the block thext will look like this:

;;; Allow IPC to standard system agents.

    (allow mach-lookup

           (global-name "com.apple.bsd.dirhelper")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.logger")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.notification_center")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.opendirectoryd.libinfo")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.DirectoryService.libinfo_v1")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.opendirectoryd.membership")

           (local-name "com.apple.ls.boxd")

           (global-name "com.apple.is.boxd")

           (global-name "com.apple.xpcd"))

5 Save system.sb on the destop, then delete the original one in the /System/Library/Sandbox/Profile and replace with this modified one. Spotlight (mdworker) should calm down.

    Thanks to Phobos.

This looks like it is working for us. THANK YOU!

Can someone confirm if the 'is.boxd' is an error and should be 'ls.boxd' please?

    Thanks,

    Hi Cwight

Yes, 'is.boxd' is an error, it should be 'ls.boxd'.

Before the fix, you see a lot of repeated messages in the log referring to an inability to communicate with "lsboxd" :

mdworker: Unable to talk to lsboxd

mdimporter: Unable to talk to lsboxd

         sandboxd: mdworker(692) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd

    These disappear after the fix.

(Notice that there never were "isboxd" errors in the log)

Note also that you must take care to look in the correct directory: /System/Library/Sandbox/Profiles/

    Not /Library/Sandbox/Profiles/ and not ~/Library/Sandbox/Profiles/

    HTH

    Ok thanks,

I've pretty new at all this particulalry with a Mac. I did it (I'm sure as it said) but I just got the dreaded swirling ball on startup. Eventually I had to reinstall ML. My computer seems better now (Macbook Air 13'), but the console is sill showing some errors; should I be concerned about these, particulalry the constant calendar agent ones:

    Hi Cwight

What you have here is a different problem than the rest of this thread.

I reccomend you do some searches on various terms in these error messages, particularly "Calendar can’t refresh the account".

    Read the topic at:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4154209?start=45&tstart=0

Try some of the solutions, if nothing works, start a new thread on this.

oh I have set up in the file system.sb in 10.8.4 ...

;;; Allow IPC to standard system agents.

    (allow mach-lookup

           (global-name "com.apple.bsd.dirhelper")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.logger")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.notification_center")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.opendirectoryd.libinfo")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.DirectoryService.libinfo_v1")

           (global-name "com.apple.system.opendirectoryd.membership")

           (local-name "com.apple.ls.boxd")

           (global-name "com.apple.ls.boxd")

           (global-name "com.apple.xpcd"))

and I woke up to the computer still running very slow and spotlight up to it's old tricks. I got Unable to talk to lsboxd twice so far after restarting spotlight.

7/11/13 10:55:23.690 AM mdworker[37179]: Unable to talk to lsboxd

    Hi, I tried your solution

    Removing:

    /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.afpstat.plist

    and

    /Library/Cache/com.apple.coresymbolicationd

but it did not work for me. Still I could see more cpu usage by mds and mdworker. Here is my Activity Indicator image, I could see lot of free memory, also not much application opened tht time. This kills all my work, all i/o goes down, mac becomes very slow response every few seconds... And there is no spotlight indexing also that time. This happens all the time.

Please help me fixing this.Screen Shot 2013-09-06 at 10.42.29 PM.png

Appreciate the suggestion - after many months of being frustrated, I found this thread.  This seem to have fixed my spotlight problem.  Previously, I had tried to force spotlight to rebulid and restart in safe mode (kept getting stuck at 25%), all to no avail.  I removed this and the other coresymbol file and spotlight indexing finished in a few hours.  Thank you!
