Apple vs Google Maps

I am very disappointed with the new Apple Map that replaced Google Maps. This is a backward move to 2009 software. How can I get Google Maps back. I need street view when I am in a strange neighborhood. 3D is cute but how many times will anyone use it. Please help!!!!

Agreed! I am so glad I waited to update and looked for bugs first. I rely on my maps as do a few of my apps that tell me how to get places. As much as I would love to use FaceTime away from home and the panorama camera is cool, nothing in the new OS that I need as much as accurate mapping. I just moved to a new city and I would hate asking all the time when I have an iPhone in my hand Btw, is google earth app no longer an option either?

The only reason I joined this forum is to register the fact that I am GUTTED at the loss of google maps but, in particular, the streetview function which was one of the main attractions of the iPad. I innocently installed IOS6 and BINGO!! Is there any way to go back to IOS5? Apple's solution to the Apple Maps disaster - loading an inferior version of google maps - is a non starter! It doesn't address the issue. Selling a product with a facility and then withdrawing it arbitrarily is unacceptable.

As an iphone customer I’m extremely disappointed how Apple treated it’s customers by replacing Google maps with Apple maps. Giving you a very simple example, put in your apple map app” Arora hotel west drayton” and it replies “no result”. And now put the same destination in Google map which I’m forced to use on my iphone5 via browser, it will immediately show you. This is just unbelievable how Apple could release their long waited high profile product in this way. I hope Apple would be considering switching back to Google maps seriously before it gets too late for them.

As I understand it, Apple needed "turn by turn" direction system, and Google refused to give that to them.

So that is partly not Apple's fault. However, they should have waited another year before dropping Google Maps.

Mapping is very very hard, very messy task. A number of countries use their own coord system, not the same as standard GPS stuff. It takes years to get it right.

I know, I did it for Nokia for 4.5 years.

It's not Apple's fault because another company refused to turn over their technology to them? Really? That's a surprising take.

It's 100% Apple's fault for causing the downgrade of service to their customers. Apparently all Google wanted was more brand recognition in the app, which Apple refused.

Google didn't refuse to allow their service to continue to be used.

Not shooting the messenger. Just discussing. 🙂

I'm just saying that Apple having a feeling of "entitlement" to Google's "turn by turn" technology and Google not wanting to give it to them doesn't exactly sound like it's Google's fault for Apple downgrading their maps functionality. Google was apparently very happy to let Apple continue to use their maps data. There were also reports Google wanted more branding (i.e. their name mentioned more) and Apple refused. So basically Apple didn't get what they wanted at the terms they wanted and took it out on us, the users.

Here in Tokyo the maps are astoshingly unusable. The block numbers (chome) are not shown. In the U.S. that would be like leaving off street names!

It's not Google's fault that Apple decided to go this way.

I gave up waiting for a solution. I cancelled my iPhone 5 order and purchased a Samsung S3.

I need a working solution to accurately navigate with public transport integration. I will hold on to the iPhone 4s in the hope that apple see sense and allow either a downgrade to iOS 5 or google maps to return as an app.

The arrogance apple continues to exhibit will be the reason they end up losing ground to the alternatives. Unfortunately the only reason this fall from grace will take longer than it should is down to the apple aficionados that will without fail order the next device even before they have seen what it offers - like the addict apple want you to become.

Read these forums and you will see the iPad3 owners disgusted by the retirement of their iDevice only 6 months into its life span being heckled by others for whining - hecklers point to tech advances that need to drive apples business decision- iPad3 owners point out the problems with this device that will now not be addressed as the reason for putting it out to pasture.

Read these forums about the request to downgrade - we all know it was possible until apple closed the window when they saw that people disliked some of the issues in iOS 6. They closed the window so they didn't have to admit it was so bad. They closed it so they could release the 200 million people have upgraded headline.

Read these forums about apple maps vs google maps - it's the same story as above - lots of unhappy customers registering here for the first time to complain. They are met with derision and told to go away and stop complaining. They are told that only a few people have complaints. They are told that as a newcomer to these forums you must be a troll. They twist your words and take them out of context to demonstrate their uber forum warrior skills. They fool you into going away thinking that you must be wrong. This is not the case. I have contributed 3 times to apple maps error reporting. At least 4 weeks since the last time and none of the errors have been addressed. I will not contribute to apple maps any further. If they think they can ransom my feedback by holding on to my previously paid for device and functionality then they can kill their hostage that is my loyalty.

Google search and watch the you tube clip of the iconic apple 1984 advert - isn't it ironic that the bad big brother (ms) that apple was ridiculing in that advert is now apple themselves.

Learn to write apps for other platforms - it is the future ;)

Adapting to use a new gadget always has a learning curve and takes time to become second nature. Those few seconds over the next few weeks are nothing compared to the hours of misrouting and the cost of taxi's rather than the public transport I endured during the first few days of iOS 6 and apple maps experience.

I love the screen size of the Galaxy and in this respect it is better than the iPhone (4&5). I was concerned about the less solid feel but my colleague has a 5 and it is noticeable lighter than the 4 which surprisingly is an unwelcome feature taking It down to the Galaxy's feel. It doesn't feel like you are holding a quality item any longer. The new black finish is so scratched now it looks older than my 4 - by years!

At the end of the day it's a smart phone - smarter than the apple it would seem - it will do for now - it may even out live the iPhone 5 if apple take this latest offering the way of the iPad3 and the soon to be dead, iPad mini... - gasp really? Yes -apple are now of the belief that iCustomers are cash cows. As soon as they can, the retina display iPad mini will be on the shelves as will the iPhone 6 - which will hopefully not "fit in one had" and by this time I hope google will have an app working on iOS 6.9
