ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

I upgraded to 10.8.2 today and cannot login to Messages, Facetime or Game Center. In Messages I get the error "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later. " when I enter my Apple ID. It was working this morning prior to the update. In FaceTime i get the error "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.". I was able to also use this in the prior version (10.8.1).

Game Center on the other hand; I've never been able to get that to login. I immediately get an error when I try to login: "The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicatiing with the server." I was hoping today's update would fix this. (I don't use it often. And it is a different Apple ID than I use for messages/facetime.

It looks like an problem on Apple's account side, but I was able to log in to the support community with my Apple ID, and my iPhone/iPad. Hopefully, I'm not the only one, and we can get this fixed.

This is consistent with what I was seeing. Initially I could see messages coming in but nothing would go out. I then signed out and tried signing back in with no luck and seeing the console message you report. I did the /etc/hosts and keychain suggestions with no change. What finally fixed it for me was removing ALL messaging type accounts in both messages and in System Preferences->Mail, Contacts, Calendars . In my case both google talk and AIM account. Then I could sign into iMessage again without the console warning message and everything was working. I could then sign back into AIM just fine.

Please help! (Ralph, you seem, particularly, helpful)....

iMessages has been acting up since upgrading from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2.

either I see red exlamation marks after sending messages from iMessage (from the mac), or the session expires and I am prompted for my password (which, after repeatedly submitting, only logs me in for a few seconds before the whole process again starts!)

HI,

Have you looked at your Hosts File ?

Use the Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder and enter /private/etc/hosts in the dialogue box that comes up.

You will probably then need to "open" the file with TextEdit.

This threads seems to cover most things that I would try:-

Removing all non iMessages Accounts from Messages.

Not allowing those same accounts to be active for Messages in the Mail, Contact and Calendars pane of System Preferences.

Checking the Date and Time plus Time Zone Settings on computer and router are correct.

If those did not work I would go to the Preferences folder:-

Finder > Go Menu > Hold ALT Key down > Select Library that appears > Navigate to Preferences

First drag this file to the Trash and Restart Messages

com.apple.imessage.bag.plist

If that does not work drag com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist to the Trash and then Restart Messages.

DO them one at a time.

The second is likely to need you to re-enter your Apple ID for iMessages into Messages.

Unbelievable, my issue this whole time was my clock was wrong! I had it set to automatically sync to Apple's default server address and keeps giving the wrong time. I even have the correct time zone set but still gives me the wrong time. I had/have to manually set the Date/Time, very strange...

Thank you for suggesting the Time being off. That is why it would not work for me and now iMessage and FaceTime are working on my Mac Lion again.

Thanks again!

HI,

My Automatic settings offers these servers

Apple Europe (time.euro.apple.com)

Apple Americas/U.S. (time.apple.com)

Apple Asia (time.asia.apple.com)

In Mac OS X 10.8.x Location services are On for selecting the Time Zone.

I have Little Snitch running and this is configured to allow the Date and Time server thing to access the Internet.

HI,

Highlight the file

Right Click and Open With TextEdit.
Edit that.

When you go to Save it the process will probably ask you to confirm that you want to override the original in some way.

Say yes.

HI,

That is strange as the Article Reserved Egotist posted does not say the file will be Locked.

Are you using an Admin Account on your Mac ?

It is probably the folder that it is in that is Locked.

Hi,

With the Finder as Front app use the View Menu > Show Path Bar.

This shows the Path to the Folder or file along the bottom of the FInder window.

At this Point you can right/control Click the folders in the Path and then select Get Info from the menu that appears.

Does this show the Private Folder as being Locked ?

Try Launching Terminal and using these instructions to Edit the file
