ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

I upgraded to 10.8.2 today and cannot login to Messages, Facetime or Game Center. In Messages I get the error "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later. " when I enter my Apple ID. It was working this morning prior to the update. In FaceTime i get the error "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.". I was able to also use this in the prior version (10.8.1).

Game Center on the other hand; I've never been able to get that to login. I immediately get an error when I try to login: "The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicatiing with the server." I was hoping today's update would fix this. (I don't use it often. And it is a different Apple ID than I use for messages/facetime.

It looks like an problem on Apple's account side, but I was able to log in to the support community with my Apple ID, and my iPhone/iPad. Hopefully, I'm not the only one, and we can get this fixed.

Hi,

iMessages works when you have "registered" an Apple ID with the servers.

It can be any Apple ID.

This means it can be different to your iCloud one if you have one or the iD you use with iTunes/App Store or even sign here to post with.

It can also be different from the Apple ID used in FaceTime.

Removing the Apple ID from any entry in the Keychain may not have the desired effects as some can also be AIM Valid Names. or possible be an actual email address.

There are sometime IDS and AuthTokens once you have managed to "register" but then you woould not need to remove them.

Seeing the difficulty seems to be getting the Mac version to register an Apple ID I am tempted to say enter it on the iPhone first.

Thank you, Ralph. I only have this one Apple ID and it's used for everything: iTunes store, App store, iPhone, Apple Store, etc.. It is "verified" according to my Apple account page, which is why I found very confusing that Messages doesn't allow me to use that account.

Do you think it's the account problem, or network connection issue? Because the error message "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." doesn't say if it's the ID problem or what.

Thanks again.

Hi Ella,

There are a range of issues with Messages (both Mac and iOS versions) at the moment.

Some like yourself can't seem to get the Apple ID they want to be recognised and registered with the iMessages server.

Some have issues with iMessages syncing to the Mac (even today I sent my wife an iMessages from my iPhone whilst I was at work. Her reply to acknowledge the messages was about 10 minutes later. When I got home and turned on the computer about 3 hours later her reply was synced but not my original iMessage).

Others seem to have s similar issue the other way round - messages are not syncing to the iOS devices properly.

The other day I "lost" the iPhone Number from the Mac's Alias settings

I had to clear it off the iPhone > Switch Off Messages > wait then turn Messages on then re-add the Apple ID and then wait server hours to get the iPhone Number back.

Because of all of this my personal view is that there are issues with the iMessages servers.

There seem to be time delays on some things such as messages being synced.

You can see delays in Sending somtimes.

The problems with trying to Register a name that works everywhere else also points to server issues rather than Network or App issues.

I would make sure the iPhone was On.

I would also be tempted to set up the iPhone first.

Things to Double Check

DNS server in the Mac's System Prefernces > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab

Date and Time of both Mac and Router.

Double Check the iPhone as well has the right Time and Date.

Hey Ralph,

Im having the same issue.

I just installed a SSD in my iMac, reintall OSX from zero and then migrate all the data from my MacbookPro. iMessage and Facetime works perfect on my MBP, iPhone and iPad. But not in the iMac, I tried:

  • Safe mode
  • PRAM clear
  • Deleting iChat, iMessage and imagent .plist
  • Killing imagent process
  • Check my apple id
  • Cleanup my host file

Here is a piece of the log when I tried to login to iChat hope you can help:

HI,

It sounds like you have a Migration issue where you may not Own or have the "right" Permissions for the Data that was transferred.

HI,

You need to access the relevant folders or files and look at their Info Panel to see if you Own it or have Read and Write Permissions.

For instance if you went to your Home Folder and did the Get Info for the Documents folder you would find you Owned it and also had Read and Write permissions.

To Access the Home Folder/Library you have to use th Finder > Go Menu > Hold the ALT key down and Select the Library that appears.

You also then visit the View Menu > Show Path bar so you can then click on the Library (A right click will reveal the Get Info option)

HI,

SO your Contacts List (Formerly the Address Book) does have your details at the My Card (Head and Shoulders icon) ?

Did you try deleting com.apple.imessage.bag.plist

Or com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist ?

The first hold the APple Server name that it is supposed to log in to

The second hold s the Apple ID you are using with iMessages. (you may have to enter the details again in Messages).

Hi,

In Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) do you list any AuthTokens for the Apple ID that appear to be linked with the FaceTime, Messages or the Game Center ?
