Q: ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

I upgraded to 10.8.2 today and cannot login to Messages, Facetime or Game Center. In Messages I get the error "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.  " when I enter my Apple ID. It was working this morning prior to the update. In FaceTime i get the error "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.". I was able to also use this in the prior version (10.8.1).

Game Center on the other hand; I've never been able to get that to login. I immediately get an error when I try to login: "The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicatiing with the server." I was hoping today's update would fix this. (I don't use it often. And it is a different Apple ID than I use for messages/facetime.

It looks like an problem on Apple's account side, but I was able to log in to the support community with my Apple ID, and my iPhone/iPad. Hopefully, I'm not the only one, and we can get this fixed.

OK, is anyone from Apple actually  working on this? It is extremely frustrating. I don't believe this is a moving target? All this "voodoo" is a bunch of time wasting pointless exercise. iMessages in 10.8.2 is obviously unstable and broken and Apple needs to fix it. Period. Hello Apple, I know your employees read this, fix it.

Yes, Apple is working on it and my apple supporter is really good and has well knowledge but the problem seems to be that weird, even the so called response team isn't able to find a particular cause.

But: Today I tried to boot up my macbook with the external hard disk I installed ML last weekend. It booted but didn't sign to imessage, because there is a host mismatch. Aha! I installed whilst connectd to my imac and the macbook has no serial number.

Hence I did a reinstallation onto the internal disk and tried to sign in..... But still the same issue like discussed in the article before.

Well, I get slowly convinced the missing serial number is the cause for this issue.

Since the macbook is an asset of my company I called the indian helpdesk to find out how to adress the support partner to get the serial number reflashed.

If there is a program to do it by myself, I'd really appreciate this.

    HI,

Most of this thread is about people who cannot log in at all.

You see to be able to login (or at least have the details in the various apps) and are having problems with the Keychain.

I would open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) and check if the iMessages Authorisation tokens are allowing access to Messages, IMAgent and IMCore

(find the token item in the password section > Double click it to open the info panel > Click the Access Control tab)

Repeat for the FaceTime and Game Center Authorisation Tokens.

    Guys I have greats news!

I went to the Apple Shop, they flashed back the serial to the mother board or logic board whatever, and all the services are working perfectly!

I tried everything in this post and others and nothing works.

So if you OSX doesn't show the serial I think you should go the Apple Shop and flash it back!

    Congratulations!

Apparently it's the only way to get rid of the connection and certificate problems.

Now I have to find a apple preium reseller flashing the **** serial number into the flash.

But: Something must be changed on apple side from the beginning of October. Before this date my mac book without a serial worked fine with ML.

From October on the problem appeared and all the following struggle....

    Cheers,

    Michael

Yeah dummbaddel,my iMac is missing the serial since 2010, so something changed with ML.

Let us know how it goes, and good luck.

Yeah, missing certificate assignment was an issue on my imac too. The facetime key wasn't assigned to facetime as application by default and just because of my kids trying to contact me via facetime. Tried to connect and stayed continously in status "trying to connect...", until I assigned facetime as application to the particular key in keychain.

Well, I can't get rid of the thought Apple ist getting more and more normally like other established vendors.......

    HI,

I have just come across this item which is an interim update to OS X 10.8.2

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4476

It mentions Messages but not what it actually fixes.

However it does mention Keychain fixes and part of the issue is getting the Authorisation into the Keychain.

    Hi Ralph,

to be honest: I checked the link and my Appstore didn't show any update for ML 10.8.2.

I tried to instal the additonally package by direct download from apple and it told me: Not applicable for my system.

The properties of this patch show a lot of languages, even german for mine, but wasn't applied for whatever reason.

Seems to be pretty much fussy......

    Hi @all,

yesterday I got my serial reflashed. Took some time to gather the necessary invoices and evidences about the logic board change. Afterwards I deleted al certificates in the keychain application and startet imessage.

Now it works like it should do. Also facetime and push services with ical application are working too.

The only question is: Why did apple changed their certificate detail from the beginning of October on?

Before everything went fine, even without a serial number. Nowadays the serial number seems to be part of the certificate and mybe used to tell yourself by email after activation, that your apple-id was used on a wahtever hardware to activate imessge or other....

This is very worth an announcement within any FAQ.

Well, at least and alot of headaches, it's working now.

    Cheers,

    Michael
