Q: ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

I upgraded to 10.8.2 today and cannot login to Messages, Facetime or Game Center. In Messages I get the error "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.  " when I enter my Apple ID. It was working this morning prior to the update. In FaceTime i get the error "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.". I was able to also use this in the prior version (10.8.1).

 

Game Center on the other hand; I've never been able to get that to login. I immediately get an error when I try to login: "The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicatiing with the server." I was hoping today's update would fix this. (I don't use it often. And it is a different Apple ID than I use for messages/facetime.

 

It looks like an problem on Apple's account side, but I was able to log in to the support community with my Apple ID, and my iPhone/iPad. Hopefully, I'm not the only one, and we can get this fixed.

A:

Check that your hosts file (/etc/host) is not blocking some important communication with Messages or game center.

 

I opened my hosts file in TextMate and commented out everything that was not default, saved it, restarted Messages and GameCenter, then logged in.

 

After logging in I uncommented the comments in my hosts file, saved it, and everything was back to normal.

 

Hope this helps someone.

    HI,

     

    My personal view is that is is a check that the Software is running on a Mac.

     

    However it would seem that  only Messages (and the iMessages part at that) and FaceTime (Which has a similar certification process) are the only two apps effected at the moment.

     

    On the other side the combo of the Computer's serial Number and an Apple ID would also seem to be fairly secure by any standards.

     

    Why there was no announcement I can only guess.

    Apple may have been aware of the refurbished computers numbers and possibly the numbers that have had Logic boards of one sort or another replaced.

    However they would be reflashing the Serial Number of the refurbs that they sell through the Store and may not be aware of the numbers that don't list their serial numbers, repaired and refurbed elsewhere.

    I had the same problem; i solved it by adjusting the time of my Macbook to match the current area where i access the iMessage

    Ralph I installed Mountain Lion today and have the same problem with messages and facetime. my host file is normal, my time is automatic and I tried deleting the keychain keys, and quitting IMagent. Also tried in safe mode. Any suggestions?

    Check the Serial Number appears in the About this Mac pane (click the OS line and it changes to the Build number and clicking again reveals the Serial Number)

    After It says build number I click on it and then it says "Serial Number System Serial#" and thats it

    You can also check in System Info (Hold ALT key whilst Selecting the top item in the Apple Menu)

     

    It will be listed in the Hardware section.

    If it is missing here you will need to get it replaced.

     

    This can occur when the Logic board(s) are replaced and the original Number is not "Flashed"  back to the new board.

     

    An Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider  may be your only options

    Ok, so I waded through all the info on this subject. NOTHING WORKED. then I found this simple video on YouTube. For people like me who don't understand what half the people are trying to say.

    I followed the instructions and hay presto–it worked!!!!!!!!

    for some people an easy and simple instruction is best.

    This is not an issue of being single minded r whatever but not everyone is deeply involved in technical stuff like some of us.

    Had the same issue, narrowed down the exact problem.

     

    My issue was the /etc/hosts file.

     

    I commented out these lines which were a remnant from an activation blocking script. Just add the # at the beginning of the line and save.

    #127.0.0.1crl.verisign.net
    #127.0.0.1CRL.VERISIGN.NET.*
    #127.0.0.1tss-geotrust-crl.thawte.com

     

    These are required to validate your certificate.

     

    You can see errors by following your Console application. Applications/Utilities/Console

    Hi,

    thx for all the practical notes...unfortunately nothin´ worked for me :-(


    But i solved the Prob by reinstalling Mountain Lion...now it seems like there had never been a Problem!

     

    I wish quick solution to everybody...and merry xmas and a healthy 2013!

    I'm in the same boat, have tried every solution (short of reinstalling the OS). Facetime works fine on my iPad 2 on iOS 6.0.1 and my MBA on 10.8.2, but will not work on my iMac running 10.7.5. I deleted the certificate, my hosts file had only the defaults, I turned off the firewall, I created a new Apple ID. I am at a loss.

    Yes, serial # is there under About this Mac.
