    Hi,

    Adium is doing iMessage ?

Of course the Apple ID if is end with @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com is also a Valid AIM Screen Name (Keep the password to 16 characters or less).

You are right that the .plists that are needed should be recreated if missing when the app is restarted.

It is one reason why removing can be helpful as they are recreated for defaults within the app.

This can totally refresh an AIM or Jabber login.

One possible thing is that you have lost (somehow) the ability to write to your own Preferences folder.

Well, Adium has a login for MobileMe. But it logs in with the Apple ID and Pass. All my iChat contacts and iChat messages are propertly routed. But it doesn't support webcam chat. I will do file transfer. I am not sure if it's going to the same server as Messages for authentication or not. There is a seperate AIM login setup. So I don't think the MobileMe is going through AOL, but I don't know.

I have some other ideas to try and fix this mess. Stay tuned!

Intersting turn of events. My Wifes iMac runs Messages just fine with my Apple ID and Password. Looked for the plist files in her Pref folder, guess what? They aren't there at all. So, under Mountain Lion 10.8.2, does Messages store it's prefs in some other / secret location?? He macine has never had an issue and both my Apple ID and her's work fine and Messages doesn't have any issues on her iMac. They are both running 10.8.2 and were updated the same day.

    Ugh!! Still working on it.

Hwy1Strat, didn't you say your computer was a hackintosh?  or a legit mac? Because mine works just fine on my wifes MBP as well.. but I have an HP Probook (Hackintosh)

  • 170. Re: ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

Yes, it is. But I still see no reason why it souldn't work becasuse for months on 10.8.2 it was working fine. Regardless of this, the new mystery of where does Messages store it's pref plist files has come up. The iMac was a clean install of 10.8 and never had any AIM, Yahoo, MSM, etc account on it. Just the Apple ID / iCloud login. But I can not locate any pref files that are supposed to be there for Messages / iChat. Her system works 100% and yet no com.apple.imessage plist type files anywhere. Even when I reveal the hidden system files is't not there. Soooo where oh where does Messages store this info?

    At least this is interesting.

Well, I think my DIY macing is to blame from what I have gathered. Too bad. But I think my issues are seperate from anyone other than FamousAmos. Thanks again for the help all.

    HI,

Apple have issued several ID types over the years.

@mac.com was some while ago and was the Apple ID that was about when iChat (ver 1) came out and Apple made the agreement with AIM that they would be recognised as Valid AIM names  (i.e they login to AIM and your Buddies can be @mac.com or AIM names)

Later MobileMe came along and IDs were replaced with @me.com

Apple would let people paying for the .Mac (@mac.com) service to link an @mac.com name/ID with their new @me.com name.

@me.com names continued to work as Valid AIM names.

(In fact as far as AIm are concerned you may have two AIM names at this point as they are recognised separately).

More recently iCloud took over from MobileMe and became free.

They took over the @me.com IDs/Names  at first.

More recently these have become @iCloud.com email addresses.

This may mean that if you started with a Paid for @mac.com name and then MobileMe and then iCloud you may have three Valid AIM names (although only one Apple ID account).

Obviously AIM and iMessages are different servers  (And different Messaging systems).

    Preferences Files/.plists

These are hidden in Lion and Mountain Lion.

In your Home Folder the Library there in these two OS version is hidden.

Full path is /Users/(Your account short name)/Library/Preferences

    Sometimes written as ~/Library/Preferences

To access this you either have to Hold the ALT key down whilst in the Finder and using the Go Menu

Or you use the Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences.

(I am not sure this is the place you are looking when you say "reveal Hidden System folders")

Messages uses all the com.apple.iChat*.plists and the com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist and com.apple.imessges.bag.plist as well.

The other Link FamousAmos posted seems to set a date of Dec 18th as the crucial date for the issue arising for the people on that site.

The closest date I can find that Apple might have done anything with the iMessages servers is the 14th Dec when Messages Beta came to an end for Lion users.

I am having the same issue with not being able to log into iMessage - Server encountered a Problem....

I just upgraded to the latest OS on my iMac and have tried:

Deleting the library files for iMessage

Shutting down the process in the Activity Monitor

    Changing my password

    Checked my dates

I need some help here - I use this stuff for work!

    Hi,

Check the Serial Number is present.

Go to the Apple Icon Menu top left and select About this Mac

Then click the line that tells you the current OS level twice.

It will change to the Build Number of the OS and then to the Serial Number (if present).

IF this is missing you need to get it reinstated at either an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider.

If it is present then try a PRAM reset

    Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

Can't reset pram for some reason - taking me to disk start-up utilities for re-install - I am on a wired keyboard and am have done it before on other machines to know the timing.  This issue has sadly eaten up hours and hours of my time.  Very annoying for sure... but I do appreciate your interest in trying to solve it.  Any suggestions?

I can receive messages with iMessage, but when I go to reply it says I'm not logged in.  It says iMessage (inactive) in the text window.  Any ideas?  I've tried everything here.

    Hi,

    A PRAM reset

    Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

We are talking about the two keys either side of the Space bar (i.e. use both on one side but read CMD and ALT on the left hand side) and then the P and R keys - all at the same time.

I am sure that this is what you are doing but I would like to confirm.

    HI,

I have noticed that many people are referring to the Name of the app as iMessage or iMessages and then talk about receiving or not receiving Chats.

Can I ask if you do mean iMessage Chats (To and from iPhone Numbers or Apple IDs registered with the iMessages server) ?

If so, I take it that in  the Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts the iMessage Account has the "Enable this Account" box ticked ?

From there the Text Entry Point  at the bottom of the Messages Main Chat window is reading "Inactive"

I can achieve this by doing the following.

Having the Messages Main Window Open.

Starting a Chat with the Contact.

Going to the Messages Menu > Accounts and selecting the ticked (Logged in) iMessage account to log it out (Unticked on next check).

This unticks the "Enable this Account" box in the Preferences > Accounts.

In this state with my iPhone set to start new Messages from the iPhone Number I could not get the Mac App to acknowledge that a messages of any sort was waiting.  I certainly did not see anything.

In Messages Menu > Accounts reselecting to add the Tick to Log the iMessage account back On line does seem to take longer than Logging out.

If you happen to have the Messages > Preferences > Accounts pane open at the iMessages account you can see the spinning cogwheel icon next to the Apple ID as it logs in.

Only when this is finished does the "(Inactive)" item disappear.

Can you give more info on what "everything" means for you that you have tried ?

Yes - that was the case (I understand you clarifying and apprciate it!)  - that said however I grabbed an alternate keyboard - that worked for the PRAM - BUT no sucess with logging in to iMessage.

    Thoughts?
