Q: ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

I upgraded to 10.8.2 today and cannot login to Messages, Facetime or Game Center. In Messages I get the error "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.  " when I enter my Apple ID. It was working this morning prior to the update. In FaceTime i get the error "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.". I was able to also use this in the prior version (10.8.1).

Game Center on the other hand; I've never been able to get that to login. I immediately get an error when I try to login: "The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicatiing with the server." I was hoping today's update would fix this. (I don't use it often. And it is a different Apple ID than I use for messages/facetime.

It looks like an problem on Apple's account side, but I was able to log in to the support community with my Apple ID, and my iPhone/iPad. Hopefully, I'm not the only one, and we can get this fixed.

    HI,

In Messages 7.0 (OS X 10.8 and 10.8.1) the first issue seemed to be a lack of DNS servers finding where the iMessages server was.

Adding Public DNS server to System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab seems to work.

    Google run 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

The next thing to check is that the Date and Time including Time Zone Settings are correct both on the computer AND in the routing devices as everything to do with Messages is Time Stamped.

AT OS X 10.8.2 and Version 7.0.1 of Messages the issue of the Missing Serial Number comes to the fore.

IN the Apple Icon Menu  > About this Mac click the line that shows the Current OS twice (once to Build number then to Serial Number)

If it is missing you will need an Apple Authorised Service Provider or Apple Store to replace it.

Hello and thanks again for the reply and attempts.

I have been following your posts through this entire issue and I appologize, some of your suggestions I have tried without mentioning:

    DNS servers - Added

Date and Time and Time Zone changed in router (actually have two) - they were incorrect

    Serial Number - there -

    PRAM - reset

Removed/stopped the processes in Activity Manager

Removed the files in the iMessage Library (can't remember their names)

I just took a hard line to my router and connected as well, rather than using wifi - no luck

Created a new mac associated email - no luck

There is probably more that I did and am forgetting as well.....

Well, from my DSL I link a linksys, and an apple AirPort Extreme , that said however, I connected hard line to the modem, bypassing the routers , redid every step of the previous suggestions... And still no success.

Thank you again for your continued efforts.  Want to take a walk in my machine?

    Hi,

Ok IS the Modem also routing as it is DSL ?

iChat and Messages really don't like this sort of set up unless one (possibly two) are not in fact routing.

The Apple Base Station can be set to be a WiFi extension of the network it joins.

It can be set in he network Settings "join an Existing Network" making is an access Point rather than a router.

IP address are issued by the existing router.

This in turn cuts out at least one Double NAT issue that can arise.

If there are  two or more device issuing IP addresses to the computer then Messages (or iChat) has difficulty in telling Buddy and Servers "where  it is" in relation to the internet.

The computer can only display one IP address but may be getting two or more issued.

See the Slow Animated (Second) gif on this page

    Hi Ralph -

No, the DSL modem only functions as such, no routing capabilities (if I am correctly understanding your question).

As far as the other setup of the Aiprot Extreme I will check that out - however I had my iMac connected directly to the modem (rebooted everything and its sister), applied all of the previous suggestions and it still didn't function.

    Thanks!

    Ok,

Lets presume the DSL modem does not route.

    From there to the Linksys.

This should be set in the Administration tab to be doing UPnP  (Any Port Forwarding or Port Triggering in the Games and Applications tab need turning Off).

The Apple Base Station then needs to be set to "Join an Existing Network"  which will give the computer an IP from the Linksys.

Connecting direct to the Modem would normally eliminate any of the routing issues that might be present in the current set up.

Are the Date and Time Settings in the router, modem and Base Station correct ?

Yes - I did have the times zones set incorrectly but corrected them early in this process.

    Hi,

AT this stage I would try the "Run the Combo" Update method.

Download and Install over what you have the latest COMBO version update there is.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581

This can often correct hard to track down issues.

Well I wish I had good news - but nothing is different.  Still no luck after running the update you provided.

Frustration level is slow approaching the point of surpassing my level of interest in making iMessage function....

    Hi,

What happens if you create a New Mac User Account (System Preferences > User and Groups)  and enter the same info into setting up Messages there ?

I had done that before - but to be certain I just created a new user once again.... sadly - thumbs down - nothing.  Same exact error - it did take a LONG time though for its first effort to respond with the error.  The second and third try was much quicker with the same response.

    Humm,

    So OS X 10.8.2

    Meaning Messages vers 7.0.1

    DNS, done

Date and Time, Done including router.

    Pram reset, Done.

    Different User tried, Done (unsuccessful)

The last points to something System-Wide rather than Account wide (although an unverified Apple ID could be the cause)

    Date and Time is system-wide.

    DNS is system-wide.

Are you using an @Mac.com name that has had the set up email removed from the Apple ID settings ?

To Explain. I have several Apple IDs in the form of what were billed as "iChat" names.

These came from registering @mac.com names after MobileMe was started  (And ran until MobileMe stopped).

Using an external email you could set up an @Mac.com name that works as an ID but also as a AIM valid name.

However you could run out of emails.

You then go to the Apple ID settings page and remove the Alternative email and then use it again to set up a new Apple ID name.

Yes - I have tried creating a new email address to utilize within the mac universe - as well an observation.  When I use any, non-associated email address(totally bogus gl@abc.com) I still get the same 'server encountered error processing' message.  I reversed it too - using real email and bad password.  I have tried deleted unused associated email addresses and tried using alternate .me, etc.

My email@mac.com works on all other devices for iMessages.

    HI,

That sounds like the @mac.com address has an Alternative email that have been verified.

You can check here and follow the "Manage My ID" links.

The other thing I have read people doing is contacting iTunes Support.

In iTunes have the Store showing.

At the bottom under help is Support.

    This leads here http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/

Using the Contact Support at the bottom of that menu takes you here https://expresslane.apple.com/Issues.action

Follow the "Manage Account" options in the various box on the right and you will get to an email offer of contact.

They may be able to tell you if the account needs resetting. (and do it for you)
