Q: ML 10.8.2 Cannot login to Messages, Facetime, or Game Center

I upgraded to 10.8.2 today and cannot login to Messages, Facetime or Game Center. In Messages I get the error "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.  " when I enter my Apple ID. It was working this morning prior to the update. In FaceTime i get the error "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later.". I was able to also use this in the prior version (10.8.1).

Game Center on the other hand; I've never been able to get that to login. I immediately get an error when I try to login: "The requested operation could not be completed due to an error communicatiing with the server." I was hoping today's update would fix this. (I don't use it often. And it is a different Apple ID than I use for messages/facetime.

It looks like an problem on Apple's account side, but I was able to log in to the support community with my Apple ID, and my iPhone/iPad. Hopefully, I'm not the only one, and we can get this fixed.

    Hi,

That's interesting because the iMessages Account has nothing to do with iCloud.

That is to say the Apple ID in use does not have to be your iCloud one.

People that have not registered for iCloud can use iMessages with any Apple ID they already have.

Of course you may Sync your Contacts via iCloud to your iOS devices.

You may also actually use an iCloud linked Apple ID as your iMessages ID.

However in System Preferences > iCloud there is not option to Activate Messages.

The Hosts file is the basic backend link for DNS.

It can have sites and addresses added to it that you don't want your computer to call.

As most apps "Call Home" during their launch, mostly under the idea of looking for updates, they can check if the app is legitimate as well.

People have reported that Verisign and Apple have become blocked sites in their Hosts file.

    Hello,

Message was working for me up to 3 days ago on my MBP OSX 10.8.4 , when I changed some configuration in the account login screen (stupid me). Ever since, it doesn t work, I receive the error message

"The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later."

Before, I had my phone number and email adresses checked in the "You can be reached for messages at:"

And I wondered if phone number alone would work, so I unchecked all email adresses.

Since then, I m unable to login again. When I try, the windows below appears, with all information greyed out (I cannot re checked the emails), and after 10 seconds, it displays the error message.

I tried login with all my email, but nothing is working. None of the workaround of this discution are working either.

Well, I guess I forgot that "If it works, don t try to fix it" ...

    Eric

PS. Facetime is still working though

Ok, I nailed it !! :-) For me the issue was that a couple of years ago my logic board was replaced (the NVIDIA problem) and the resseller who did the work apparently forgot to re enter the serial number of my Macbook on the new board. (Nice work guys)

Since the app Message became available on Lion, I never really logged out of it. I installed 6 months ago Mountain Lion and since then never logged out of Message.

3 days ago when I tried to change the configuration of the addresses I can be reached at, Message logged me out and ask me to sign in again, which failled.

Message is probably now (Mountain Lion) using a security scheme requeseting the serial number of the Mac, since none was present, the loggin failled.

I used an Apple software called "Blank Board Serializer" (found on the net) to flash my serial number on the logic board.

    And it worked !!!!!!!

(Btw, you cannot change the serial number with this software, it s a one time burn operation on the board EEPROM, mine was empty so it worked, but if a number is already burned you cannot change it).

Something was really broken after all ... :-)

And for those curious to know, yes, Message works with only the phone number, no need of addtional email.

Had the same problem as Eric.  The logic board in my MacBook Air was replaced nearly two years ago.  Technician never put a serial number in.  After the 10.8.5 update Messages and Facetime no longer worked.  Deleting expired and iMessages certificates didn't fix it, neither did removing preference files.  I finally was able to locate "Blank Board Serializer", ran that and that fixed the problem.  Thanks, Eric for the tip!

For reference for anyone else, there are three versions of BBS out there, 3T100, 3T106 and 3T110.  The one you need depends on the Mac you are using.  3T100 is for older Intel Macs, 3T106 booted on my wife's MBP but not on my Air and 3T110 worked for me.  However, be careful as this is a one time only operation.  If you mess it up it is permanent just like a tattoo full of regret.  Better to just take the machine back and have the repair tech finish the job.

    Hi Jay

Could you help me out with 3T110?

    Best regards
