Q: can´t opne my library. HELP!

Hello, i have a problem with aperture 3. I can´t open my library since a week.It is a library in my local drive and i have all the masters referenced in an external DROBO 800 firewire . It´s a 92000 versions library.I tried the following:

1.- Start pressing SHIFT to avoid previews: doesn`t work

2.- Repair library : doesn´t work

3.- rebuild library : it starts but crashes when you start to use aperture.

( FACES is NOT enabled)

4.- Make a new library, then import my last VAULT. Result: i have all the structure ( folders, projects, albums) but 0 masters refererenced. No photos available.

I´m thinking of doing the following:

A: MAke a new library and import to it the old ( that one that doesn´t open ) to this new  one.

OR

B: Do the following that i found in this forum

1/ locate your aperture library

2/ right click it & choose 'show package contents'

3/ open database/ folder

4/ backup everything you see there (e.g. by copying to desktop/aperture-backup)

5/ delete *.appdb and *.db (I've also seen people deleting previews / thumbnails)

6/ cmd+option click on your library and choose rebuild library... if it's successful,

you should see progress like 'x out of y' after few minutes. If not, kill it

7/ copy your database part back (e.g. faces.db) to see if it works with your new

library

hope this helps

good luck!

What do you think i could do more. it a very important library for me.

thanks in advance

Roberto

    Roberto,

what is the error message you get when you try to open the library? What exactly happens? We need more details on what exactly happens, when you are trying to open the library. Can you open other libraries? Is that one the only library giving trouble?

    How is your DROBO formatted?

If you get a crashlog, please post the first 50 lines

    Regards

    Léonie

Hi Leonie, Apparently this is the library that doesn´t work. And the lilltle time it does until hang uop it works very very slowly. My DROBO is MAC os PLUS formatted and it has work since 2 years ago wothout problem. What exactly happens is tha if i start aperture it hangs without opening. I only can star it pressing ALT+OPTION or ALT to change a new library. I,m trying to start with a library from ayear  ago and it cannot open it either.

This are the first lines of my report message:

    MAny thanks!

A hang report unfortunately does not tell much. Are there any more diagnostic messages in the Console window?

I see you are using the very first Aperture 3 version 3.0.

With your current MacOS you should be able to upgrade to Aperture 3.0.3 at least, see the Download suport page:

    Aperture 3.0.3

Perhaps upgrading will help, there are a few bugfixes.

Do you have a second drive where you could move your library to, to see if the drive is the problem?

And have you tested, if the DROBO is ok? You could check this by creating a new, empty library; importing some images and referencing them on the DROBO.

Does your Aperture Library contain MobileMe albums? Can it be that it is still hanging trying to connect to Mobile Me? Have you signed out from MobileMe in the System Preferences and Aperture's web preferences?

The list of things you tried already is very impressive. I see, that you did not list removing the Preferences - I'd try that next, see the

    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

on how to do this; also check, if you tried all basic measures.

I like your idea to try to import the Aperture Library into a new library. If none of the above does help, try that next.

    Regards

    Léonie

I haven´t installed it because it doesn´t appear in the software update.

If you did not see the updates in Software update - you might even be able to update to Aperture 3.1.2, that looks like the last version compatible with Leopard:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1369

But I'd make sure you have a backup of your current setup, before you try any major changes again
