I updated my iPhone 3GS last night to iOS 6 and found that if I click on any old text messages it gets deleted completly. A quick google suggests similar problem was faced when user updated to iOS 5 last year.
now question is - are these messages still on phone or completly wiped out from the memory? Is there any way I can recover old messages? Unfortunatly, I didn't cared to take backup of my phone before upgrading it to iOS 6 😟

THis same thing happened to me too. I haven't done a back up for months.
I did sync and back up my phone. I lost my pictures and text messages, my pictures just now came back about 3 hours later but the text messages have not... Is there a way to get them back on my phone?
I have exactly the same problem.
You go into messages the message is there with summary text, tap on the message and it's blank. Come out of the message it is removed from the list.
If you close message and re-open the messages appear in the list but again cannot be opened.
Strange thing is that happaned with some of messages, not with all...
same problem with 3gs.

I too have had everything wiped off my phone when updating to iOS 6. Never had this problem before and was not clearly informed that the phone may get wiped (sure, there was an essay to read but, like most people, just clicked confirm). Every other update I've had has gone smoothly without a problem so presumed this would be the same.
Why was there not a clear warning stated before going ahead with the upgrade that your phone may get wiped and you will need to back it up just incase?

I had faced the same but not with all SMSs , only with SMS received from people who are not part of my address book and with IDs rather than mobile number , the preview shows the content but when opening the message it will be empty and then disappears , it goes directly to the bottom of the list .
Have we lost or SMSs , waiting for apple support to clarify.
Add me to the list. Updated from most recent to iOS 6 last night and all text messages are gone. On the phone with Apple, but not feeling confident that I'll be getting them back, which is depressing as there were several important ones there. The woman on the line is telling me everytime you update your software it does that...despite me telling her I've done so 10 to 15 times now and this NEVER happens. Won't restore from backup either (I didn't/don't backup to iCloud, just my Mac).
Anyone with any brilliant solution should please chime in!
Exactly the same on my iphone 4, its only the messages from companies not people in my contact list. If I switch my phone off and then back on again they come back but they disappear as soon as I click on them 😟
i havent done a backup for my 3gs since i got a new lap top. i updated to ios6 n lost all photos, music, and contacts. also after update i only had a few apps/icons. i didnt have messaging or music or anythin like that i had phone, email and safari.
I updated my iPhone 4s this morning to iOS 6 and while I still have all of my texts and pictures, I lost all but three of my contacts. So. Annoyed.
I have the same problem - lost all my text messages, emails and photos and some contacts after updating my iphone4 to iOS 6. Hopefully a response from Apple is forthcoming!
Mine are missing too. Except, I don't see any text list at all, my entire screen is blank.
I too would like to know if these are gone, or if they'll reappear later on today [as I updated mine iPhone4 about 3 hours ago.]
