iTunes 10.7 update PROBLEMS OS 10.6.8

I use(d) my iPhone 4 as a USB Tethered Modem on a Macbook laptop.

ALL software is up to date

Problems:

  1. The exact second iTunes 10.7 update completed it's install, my iPhone4 STOPPED being a USB Tethered Hotspot!
  2. iPhoto STOPPED SEEING new pictures on the iPhone4.

iTunes still sees the iPhone but Network does not see the iPhone when it is Tethered via USB & the iPhone option is GONE

I can turn on Bluetooth and use it as a modem but it does not work USB Tethered. This is NOT a viable Option!

Trouble shooting:

I have an Powerbook G4 OS 10.5.8 that has NOT been updated in a year and the iPhone works as a USB Tethered Modem & iPhoto sees the pics on the iPhone, so it is NOT a cable or an iPhone problem.

Apple Support REFUSED to help me saying they have no record of problems (but I found with Google, a lot of problems reported on Windows devices).

THEY ALSO SAID THEY DO NOT OFFER EXCEPTIONS AFTER THE 3RD ONE, EVEN IF IT IS THEIR FAULT DUE TO A SOFTWARE UPDATE!?!?

I took both laptops and the iPhone4 to an Apple store Genius Bar and all they could come up with was to reinstall the OS, which they did without deleting my applications because I do not have the serial numbers to several very expensive apps that I got with the system when I bought it used.

2+ HOURS LATER...

  1. Network had no iPhone option at all.
  2. iPhoto still did not see pics on the iPhone4
  3. iTunes still saw the iPhone4
  4. Bluetooth is my Only Option to get to the WWW but it's SO SLOW I'm now using the Powerbook!

😟It sure seems that since Steve is gone,Apple has been infected with IBM-itis😮

😠 FIX THIS UPDATE A.S.A.P. PLEASE! 😠

I had the same problem.

I use os10.6.8 on a mac pro and a laptop

I installed itunes 10.7 on the mac pro and the usb tethering no longer worked. I could tether via bluetooth. Iphoto could see and import photos from the iphone4 and itunes could see it. It still worked via usb when plugged into my laptop os10.6.8 because I was still on itunes 10.6.3 so I know its an issue with itunes 10.7 and the phone itself hasnt been damaged

I updated to ios6 today and I still have the same problems.

FIX IT APPLE!!

TEST YOUR SOFTWARE PROPERLY BEFORE RELEASING IT!!!

Another case of bad quality control on the part of Apple...

Luckily I have several Macs, and tend to update only one at a time, an wait to see what they have messed up this time, they manage make quite a few headaches with EVERY update, despite what the appologists would have you believe.

Anyway, having compared two machines, (one updated the other not) the update of iTunes to 10.7 seems to have updated AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext to version 2.3.6 and in the process messed it up (of course, its not their fault).

You need to replace this kext with a good version or an earlier working version, repairing permissions did not work.

To do this, download KextUtility and install it, then drag the old working kext onto the KextUtility icon, it willreplace the broken version and fix any other permission issues in your S/L/E folder.

and the working kexts (if you can't find it on your time machine backup)...

Version 2.2.0 (Working on 10.6.8) http://db.tt/Fahk9VBe

Version 2.3.6 (Working on 10.8 & 10.7) http://db.tt/U674UcOV

Nice one Apple, thanks for wasting a few hours of my life, AGAIN.

I am NOT a Computer Expert! I am barely a novice and fixing problems is Way out of my league. I am thankfull that someone has a solution after these weeks of waiting for a fix, BUT... since I don't speak Russian exactly how do I find and use this program on my MacBook? I need someone to lead me by my hand through this fix PLEASE!!

Hi gr8ad4u (nice name !!!).

Use the link above, download one of the the kext files first, and save it to your desktop.

Next, download http://cvad-mac.narod2.ru/Kext_Utility and install the program. Then launch the program, wait for it to repair the permissions etc, it should take a minute or two. Leave the program running with its window open.

Next, drag the kext file you saved to the desktop into the KextUtility program window and it will automatically install it for you.

Finally restart your machine and you should be back up and running.

You need to set a master password for your computer. Terminal doesnt like computers that havent set a master password, its not a concept or option is understands.

I have now solved my tethering problem - I didnt need to use terminal.

I downloaded the kext utility, unzipped it and put the .app file into my applications folder, then I dragged the kext file from my laptop (AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext version 2.3.0)

The utility replaced the one that itunes 10.7 must have installed or modified into a backup folder and installs the one from my laptop where I was still on itunes 10.6.3 and it has the same permissions as the other files in that folder system/library/extensions

I rebooted and plugged my iphone in via the usb charger/data cable and immediatly the system put up a window stating:

A new interface has been detected

the "iphone USB" network interface has not been set up. To set up this interface use network preferences"

I then clicked the blue button NETWORK PREFERENCES

This showed the iphone in NOT CONNECTED status so I clicked on ASSIST me and just keep going, you will notice the red dot beside the iphone changing to orange (no IP address) then it changes to green and all is well!!

Thanks a million to Hibernian56 and whoever made kext-utility!!

No thanks to apple for not testing their software properly and wasting my time with hours of reading online!!!

Im on 10.6.8 on both machines

The problem with the kext file that was updated by itunes 10.7 was that the machine no longer detected the iphone thru the usb cable. Thanks to the other users on here its now fixed! ;-)

I don't know why, but didn't work for me either. However I have solved my problem by downgrading iTunes back to 10.7. Here is very nice tutorial how to do so:

http://www.emacconsulting.com/apple/itunes/downgrade-itunes-11-to-itunes-10-7/

After all done, you might not see iPhone USB in your Network settings. What you have to do in this case is hit the + button and add iPhone USB manually. Then press Apply and that's it.

cheers

Hibernian56, Thanks very much for your update, I finally got mine to work, though I did something different.

I used the following AppleUSBEthernet version, I tried yours but didn't work.

1. Download AppleUSBEthernet version that works :

http://www.respondit.co.nz/downloads/AppleUSBEthernet.kext.tgz ( Got it from another Apple Support post - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4394673?start=0&tstart=0 )

2. Download the Kext Utility :

http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Kext-Utility.shtml

3. Unzip AppleUSBEthernet, drag and drop it over the Kext-Utlity.app, it will automatically replace the broken one and create a backup folder.

4. To verify the Kext is working, run the following on Terminal

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost

If above returs no error, you should be OK

5. Turn on HotSpot on iPhone, Plug via USB to MacBook, there will be an Alert detecting your iPhone.

6. iPhone should now be available on Network.
