Since I upgraded to iTunes 10.7, I can no longer sync my iPhones nor my iPad. iTunes says "could not back up ... because a session could not be started". I'm on w7x64, updated.

For all devices, iTunes says "could not back up ... because a session could not be started".

I have already tried to re-install, reboot, stop/restart Apple mobile devices service, without success.

Thanks!

Exactly the same problem for me.

I got around it by backing up to icloud from the device. Then you can actually sync (although I think the iphone/ipad should be syncing anyway, it just can't get a backup). But yeah as soon as I upgraded to itunes 10.7 I had the exact same issue as you.

And ever since upgrading to iOS 6 I now can't sync my devices over wifi - they just don't appear in the devices list no matter what I try.

There have been major issues with these recent updates for me I have to say, and along with them dropping google maps, it's putting me off.

Hopefully solutions will be found soon.

I followed your advice and backed up to iCloud.

My first iPhone upgraded successfully to iOS. After that, I tried the local sync again and - surprise, surprise - it works...

Tried the same with the second iPhone (same model) and that one hangs while preparing the upgrade. Maybe it's got to do with the time in the day, the amount of sunshine or the temperature of my CPU???

This is simply disgusting. I'm happy to pay such prices as long as the quality is there. But this just is'nt right!!

I am having the same problem with 2 iPhone 5's, 1 iPhone 4s, 1 iPhone 4, and a new iPad. Seems to me the problem is burried in software and not the devices.

I am trying to restore my new 5's from back up but I can't get past this part. I have tried deleting all old back ups and making new ones with the old iPhones but still... nothing.

It happened to me, as well. I reimaged and tried a bunch of the options I've found on the boards and nothing worked. I eventually downgraded iTunes. Can't/won't upgrade iOS until I can get a working version of iTunes--or at least one that does local backups properly. iCloud is a reaonable alternative, but iTunes is faster in terms of a restore and gives a good measure of backup redundancy.

Same problem but here's the trick that works for me:

when you get the sync error message, keep the iPhone you want to sync plugged into your computer and QUIT iTunes. Then, immediately restart iTunes and the iPhone immediately starts to sync. Give it a try and report back if it works for you. I did this workaround with two iPhone 5s and an iPhone 4 that all got the error message when trying to sync with a cable and this worked with all of them.

I have had this problem with Windows 7 and iTunes updates for some time. Each time it takes hours to solve but with the over the air upgrade to IOS6 on my iPhone and iPad, I was determined to solve and remember what I did, So here it is:

I hope this helps you and any other users.

I had this problem a few times.

So in iTunes, on my iPhone tab, I un-selected the checkbox to "Sync this iPhone over Wi-Fi".

On my next Sync it backed up just fine. (Note that in this case I was backing up to my computer, not to iCloud)

So it could perhaps be something like a router problem, completely outside the regular iPhone / Computer sync. That would make it hard to diagnose, since everybody uses different routers.

This is what worked for me.

1) In ITUNES, right click on the device you are attempting to sync

2) Select Backup, if the backup fails, try it again several times in rapid succession until it completes. Mine completed on first attempt.

3) After a successful backup, you should be able to sync the device

Since I upgraded to iTunes 10.7, I can no longer sync my iPhones nor my iPad. iTunes says "could not back up ... because a session could not be started". I'm on w7x64, updated.
