64 bit depends more on your Processor than Mac OS X, correct ?

Some Mac users assume that 64 bit capability comes automatically with Mac OS X, but according to the list shown in HT3696 it differentiates between the processors that happen to be on your iMac Intel. So is it correct to qualify 64 bit capability more dependent on the processor than the Mac OS ?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 12GB RAM, 27" iMac 1TB H/D, La Cie

all Intel core 2 duo and later models are 64bit

appled started using core 2 duo in 2006

Thanks, Rudegar, after much delving into Apple Timeline I have to conclude that what you say is correct and I have to concede that 64 bit capability came automatically with Mac OS X.
