Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?

Does anyone know why the original iPad can't be updated with iOS 6?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Apple frequently drops off support for older hardware models. Unfortunately, they dropped the 1st gen iPads from being updated to iOS 6. Often times the hardware isn't capable of taking full advantage of newer OS's. I'm not sure if this is the reason why they dropped the original iPad but the 3rd gen iPads are quite a bit more powerful and I can only assume that when Apple designed iOS 6 they wanted to take full advantage of the iPad 3's processing power.

The new iOS 6 will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5; the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad; and the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch.

I hope this answers your question.

I normally just read these threads and this is the first time I ever commented. Im a long time mac user (I even had a classic)

Im a hard core advocate for macs and always have been... this whole ios 6 thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Its bs to fall back on the excuses that are given for why gen 1 pads dont have a ios 6. It seems like the perfect time for apple to show why ppl have always paid a little more to get a supiror product. The fact that I read all these postings and actually typed "ipad vs surface" into my internet search has me shocked. And if I a long time mac fanatic could atleast be tempted to see whats on the other side should have a lot of ppl in apple nervous

actually the only option isnt just to purchase a new ipad, it may be to start looking at other types of tablets.... With a world of tablets comming out most a fration of the price with nearly the same options and specs (some with better ones) the choice to pay top dollar for equipment that the manufacture says has a 1-2 year shelf life seems a little counter intuitive.

the rational behind buying apple has always been longevity. The hardware has always been about quality and one that out lasts the competiton

Many will rationalize this and toss up hands saying "what are you gonna do? thats just electronics" but this is an extreme departure for apple as a company where the huge amounts of thier constituants bought an Ipad one and it wouldnt be much to do the right thing and release a moded ios 6 for the pad

Apple cannot just "release iOS 6 for the iPad 1". iOS 6 requires hardware that the iPad 1 cannot provide. If Apple released iOS 6.1.3 to be installable on iPad 1s, it simply wouldn't work. A new version of the OS would need to be created, and they're never going to do that for any device that is three or four generations old, no matter how short the time scale has been.

Oh, never mind. It's all been said before a dozen times. Carry on moaning if it makes you feel better.

well honestly what your saying isnt quite true. the "hardware" isnt an issue this is a huge misconception the iphone 3gs and ipad one both have 256mb of memory, yet one gets 6 and one doesnt. The only plausable expanation (Im open to hearing others) is that 3gs is still on shelves putting money in pockets (at the time) and ipad 1 is not. I get it its buisness, my only point was not to "moan" as you so inelegantly put but was to express true concern to a company that Im a huge fan of, that I have been a customer to for years, that I as a customer am unhappy with something. This is how buisness works best.... products are made, customers give feed back, successful companies listen and respond or they do not and see if they maintain a market share based on those decisions.

-yours truely, the repetitive and moaning customer

There's your problem. You are not giving feedback, and Apple aren't listening. You are not addressing Apple here, these boards are manned by daft volunteer users who can do absolutely nothing to further your cause. If you wish to give feedback to Apple, I'm sure you know how. It is a waste of time here.

A waste of time is this conversation which has nothing to do with the origional thread. You are making an assumption that I didnt also give feedback in the proper apple channels (which I did).

I posted this here becuase there is a value to having grassroots support and vocalness about issues. these forums, while not manned by apple but by "daft" volunteers, are still very effective in letting individuals communicate and share opinions. If that leads to more people thinking "Hey Im not alone I feel the same way" then they will post here, and chances are they will email apple. Its a much more networked world than you may think, and things spill from one to the next. Things like this are all about momentum. If ppl feel this way then thay should vocalize where they can and continue to do so (which is why this thread still gets comments)

I dont share your pecimissm, i never thought that apple would respond to my comment all I care about is that I made my point known where I could and if others share it for them to do the same.

on an off note you may want to try being more positive, from the "carry on moaning" coment to the calling the ppl that run these boards "daft". You really havnt effectively advanced the conversation or made any contibution. This isnt facebook or some other social media where there is an un ending morass of back and forth and wounding of online ego and retorts... Its the apple support comunity and like anything else it is only what you make of it. Im trying to make a contibution here and you can choose to do what you wish.

Change to samung, I did faster phone, and since the IPad gen1 can not update, i need a new tablet and seems that the samsung tablets are creating some remarkable products. I was a hard core apple fan but have come to realize that with no Jobs, apple will suffer and will put out inferior product and could care less about thier customer base. With no update of the Ipad 1 is what got me intrested in the Samsung, and well the rest is history.

I do beleive this is goingto do massive damage to Apple, so be it.

Obviously I am late finding out about this. I just tried to install an app (Google Maps), it required 6.0, tried to update my first-gen IPad and discovered this fiasco.

I've always been a fan of Apple products, although I'm not religious about it - I own and use Win and Linux PCs, and Android tablets and phones as well. OTOH, I bought a Mac Mini just to run OS X. The build quality, attention to detail, and especially the attention to getting the user experience right is superior to any other company out there.

Of course Apple has every right to make decisions about whether it is technically feasible, or even just cost effective, to support older products. Every company does that - but every company does not abandon their customers after 2.5 years. Consider how long Microsoft has supported XP, for example. Not my favorite company at all, and currently on my craplist for discontinuing the Technet program, but still - do the comparison. XP was released in August 2001 !!!, and extended support will continue until August of 2014. That's nearly 13 years vs. 2.5. I'm not claiming that XP compares favorably with OS X, or iOS - it doesn't. I'm just saying that other companies can and do support their products for much longer periods than Apple.

I've been considering getting a new IPad vs. the new Nexus 7 (certainly much less expensive). I suppose I should thank Apple for making that an easy decision now. In the meantime, does anyone want to buy an IPad-shaped paperweight?

Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?
