Can't Open Mac Mail after Recent Update

Last night I performed a software update and today I cannot open my mail application. When I do, I get the following error message:

-------------------------

You can’t use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X

You tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085) in:

/Applications/iWork '09/Mail.app

It can’t be used on this version of Mac OS X. Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications folder on your computer. For more information, click the Help button.

------------------------

When I try to open Mail from the applications folder as it instructs, I still get the same error message. I did notice that when I view the program in the preview window that it says Mail version 4.6 even though the error message says 4.5. I would suspect that has something to do with the problem, but that's as good at troubleshooting as I get. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

So as usual, I updated the software on My mac and laptop... it is version 10,6.8 and now my mail applications Version: 4.6 won't open. Says it is the wrong version to work with the software... this is the FIRST time I am unhappy with my Apple products. Now to take the time to figure this out. I know enough to be technologically dumb.

hoping for clear simple step by step resolution to this issue

Glad to see I'm not the only one... I was feeling rather incompetent

I am having the same problem - but I think I know what is causing it. It the past, even if you had moved applications from Apple's default location/folder, the update still worked fine. Now, it appears that if you have moved the mail program to a different location than just the "Applications" folder - then after the update, the program won't launch. I think if you put the old 4.5 version of mail back in the Applications folder and re-run the secutity update, it might work.

I was right! It worked.

You need to put programs you've moved back in the applications folder - where the update looks for them. Then re-run the security update - and poof - my mail now works again.

Other programs like Safari and Quicktime player should also be put back.

I suspect everone having this problem has somewhat customized your folders - I guess Apple won't let us be creative anymore!

Anyway... it works!
