Q: can i use icloud.com instead of me.com?

I have a me.com address but I can not create an account for icloud.com. Any email to <my addr>@icloud.com is rejected.

What do I need to do to secure the icloud.com address?

@icloud.com addresses are being rolled out over an unspecified period: you will get one without having to do anything, and it will be additional to your @me.com address. You will get a notification email when your account is updated. Please see this page:

I'm in exact same situation. The strange thing is that if I go to appleid.apple.com and click on forgot password from my icloud.com address, it shows me steps to reset it. How's that even possible if the a/c is not alloted to me yet? It even sends a mail to reset password to that icloud account. I'm worried that somebody else might have tagen that account.. is that possible?

You have an Apple ID - this could well be associated with iTunes or from purchasing hardware. Only you know whether it's also been used to create an iCloud account. If so, this account would have an @me.com address associated with it, and you will shortly get an @icloud.com version as well. If you haven't set up an iCloud account then you still have the ID - it doesn't mean someone's hacked you.
