iOS 6 and Home Sharing on iPad 3 wi fi finally working kinda ...

Last night, after updating my iPad 3 to iOS 6 home sharing would not work at all, music nor video. Spent time with settings, making sure Apple ID and passwords were correct, rebooting iPad, rebooting iMac and updating Mountain Lion, verifying it works on my other iDevices running iOS 5.1, reviewing articles online and discussions here. NADA. I did a reset of my settings, nope ... No go. Decided to do a backup - reset all - restore in the morning(today).

Could not sleep, awoke around 2AM; rebooted iPad, iMac was already running and iTunes runs 24-7. AND IT JUST STARTED WORKING! Kinda. Did not do the reset of the ipad. Video appears fine, I've quit it in multi-task bar more than a few times, restarted iTunes a few times and video is good to go as before. However, in Music, the only thing displayed is Playlists, Songs, Genre. Completely blank display under Artists, Albums, composers. I have left it on oe of these pages for at least ten minutes in case it was a loading issue (around 17K songs in my iMac's iTunes library. ... This problem does not occur on the 5 devices (iPads 1&2-iPhone 4's still using iOS 5.1.) Its just as quick as it was before updating itunes. I've read some discussions on this site where it took 45 minutes or longer to load those pages on an iPhone 4S, also a large library. No way I'm going to do that. Will not be updating my other devices until that issue is resolved and I have more confidence with my iPad 3 and the new iOS.

Rather than keeping myself at this issue, I'll wait a few days peek at AppAdvice this weekend, then call support middle of next week if not resolved by update or Apple doing something with their servers or whatever.

Having to spend this much time getting the new iOS to where it is now is not what I've come to expect from Apple. There was plenty of time to beta; and if it is a function of their servers then its poor planning and execution. I'm a user, not a beta tester. Very disappointed. I use the iPad mainly for reading, video and music enjoyment. Sure I use some of the native apps for reminders, etc. but do not need it for business or ... Maybe it's time to start exploring Amazon's and Google's offerings for the next iteration of hardware and software. Too bad, but this is what secrecy & arrogance breeds ... Apple may be at its apex and will follow the pattern of Microsoft.

While I realize the previous paragraph is not going to fix anything, I certainly earned the right to vent on an Apple support forum.

Hi Scope. By Reset do you mean an Ios restore of your device? Haven't tried that yet. Not ruling it out.

Let me share my 'progress' thus far:

Went into Preferences of iTunes and turned off HomeShare then turned it back on. After this I was able to get to the 'Shared' menu for Music and Video on my iPhone. Couldn't get there before (with Ios 6), even after waiting an interminable amount of time. I guess this is progress...

However, I STILL get the 'Half Circle of Doom' as I lovingly refer to. Usually (as this happened intermittently with ios5) cured with a Modem/Router reboot. This time=No Luck. How do you say: ***??? This is Apple we are dealing with, yes?? Aaarrrggg!!!

Will keep plugging away.

Share your sentiment about looking into other devices. And, although, I'm not exactly an 'Apple Fan Bot/Boy' I do very much appreciate their products and the workmanship that goes into them, I am getting pretty tired of the recent lackluster performance of said machines/Software. Esp. iTunes which is, as ever, absolute garbage on PC. Then again, and as I said, I do like me some Apple. Besides I have about a gajilion paid Apps that I most definitely will NOT be repurchasing on other platforms.

Ok. Rant. Off. Sorry.

Keep you posted.

The reset I wrote about was Settings-Reset-Erase All Content and Settings. Don't bother, I just did that and restored from backup. Still in exactly he same situation. Our iPad 1’s and iPhone 4’s running 5.1 appear to be fine and display everything including album covers. I firmly believe its something in iOS 6 and/or iTunes. Either way, you'll keep knocking yourself out possibly to little avail in my opinion so this is my solution:

My iPad gen 3 is still under warrantee. I'll call Apple Support tomorrow, get a case number and ask them to call. I'm not sure if Apple has been working on this, been made aware of or ??? They keep so secretive about these types of things. I'll let you know what they tell me and keep you in the loop. If you do happen to discover a fix, please let me know. I don't know how busy support will be over the next day or two. We'll see.

I used to be quite a "fanboy" as you put it. We have an iMac, an iPad 1, two iPad 2`s, my iPad 3, and four iPhone 4’s. unfortunately, over the last year or so there has been a noticeable shift in employee attitudes in support and their stores. This surely filters down from above and along with human nature and believing they will always be better than the competition, it breeds arrogance and a shift away from the support of yesterday. I don't know if its because Jobs is no longer around or what, but it does exist. I broke from PC and windows six years ago. While I don't relish the hardware and app penalty of complete change, this update to iOS 6 is bad. Anyway, time will tell.

In the meanwhile, I'll be in touch.

Sounds good Larry. Agreed on all counts again.

Just a point of clarification: I meant no disrespect to Apple aficionados whatsoever. Undoubtably Apple products of every kind function worlds above PC and other platforms. By 'Fanboy' I meant hardcore, 'Apple is the only way' type people that look down their nose at anything else. There are other means of execution for other types of software. Specifically, I myself am somewhat, and unfortunately, tied to PC. If I could run everything solely on Apple products I would.

Having said that, it is somewhat alarming that the response time (and number of issues) has increased in recent years. I surely hope it's not a trend. I, like you, am an end-user who spends quite a bit on high quality components and don't like the feeling of being a bit of a guinnea pig when it comes to fleshing out the potential for said items. I don't want to be a beta tester. And if I have to be, I think I should be compensated. ; )

Let's stay in touch. Would love to hear of your dealings with support!

Glad to see it's not just me (and I can't find anything online either)

I'm pretty confident it's ios6.. I was just able to access my PC's shared library from my MacBook Pro.. both on iTunes 10.7

My 3GS (used as an MP3 player), 4G and iPad can see the library out there, but they also get the "half circle of doom".. not a memory problem on either phone (or if it is, the library is getting really corrupted during connection)

Hey Justin,

I called Apple Support and after confounding their first level, they transferred me to a specialist. She was extremely supportive. They were not aware of the problem. After I let her know all the steps I had taken, the fact that my other iDevices using ios5.1 had no problems and emailed her some screen shots of what was going on in music, she told me it must be an Apple software problem that they must solve.

I was relieved that she was truly interested and surprised that it was never reported. I told her of the others on their discussion forums and sent her the emails I get from everyone's response to my two topics on the issue. She took all the data and information so it could be forwarded to engineering and tech. Said to give her at least three days for a response from tech and said I will get their answer to her, whether they resolve by then or will require more time. Let you know the results when I have them.

I've been having the exaxt same problem and must say it's extrememely irratating. Is there any way to just return to the previous update ios 5 because ios 6 has been nothing but a headache? The maps application is poor, no youtube, certain apps that used to work just fine doesn't even work at all since the update, and now the sharing feature doesn't work which may be the very last push to make me grab my reciept and run my ipad 3 back to the store for a full refund. This is really driving me crazy and worst of all the same thing happened on my 4S which was working just fine before the update. I have over 100 gigs of music and a 16 gig ipad, so the sharing feature is crucial for me when I'm at home, now i can't even use that. Is there any word on Apple fixing this problem because if not I dont know if I could continue to be an apple customer?

I am still waiting to hear back from Apple Support as I stated above. I was told yesterday it will take a MINIMUM of three days before I hear back. I believe we must give them an opportunity to perform as I was told. I'm not trying to be a fanboy, you've probably read my thoughts regarding Apple products above. That being said, I am going to give them the opportunity to fix the issue. As I am, you're under warrantee on the new iPad. You may wish to call support yourself and refer to this thread as I did. The more others complain directly, the quicker they may respond, I HOPE...

Regarding going back to iOS 5.1. I was told they do not support it, meaning they will not help you go back. There are some links on the web on how to do that should you wish to search ... I found them using Google. The reason I'm not in a panic mode now is that as I stated it works "kinda", not well though, and it still works fine on my iPads and iPhones that are not yet converted to iOS 6.

I'll post here if I get more information from Apple. Best of luck.

Larry

I was having the same issue. My iPhone and MacBook Air hooked up fine but my iPad 3 would not get past the half moon. I did a little more research and found others were having WiFi issues (although I was not). I decided to do a reset to factory for the network thinking that maybe the iPad had an issue with this. You go to Settings, general, go to the bottom of the screen and press reset. Select Reset Network Settings and the system will restore network to factory settings. After it reboots, set up your WiFi and my Home Sharing worked without any more issues. Give it a try.

Nope-as stated in first post, I did a reset ... Reset setting, content, etc. to be sure, I just did a reset of network settings before replying to you. Although I can get videos to work, there are times when after playing a movie for a while, the iPad will not respond to any finger touches ... Even depressing home button will not turn video off or deleting videos from multi-task bar. Keeps playing like its locked up. Sometimes requires a full power off and reboot to stop the video!

Music still as same problems including artist, album and composer pages not displaying.

Appreciate the thoughts though. If you could check to see if all ok on your music, etc and if ok, let me know how many songs in your library (mine has 16910) it would be of interest to see if all ok in that area.

iOS 6 is buggy using Home Share. Again to restate, the problems do not occur on my other iPads and iPhones using iOS 5.1.

Larry

I updated to iOS6 on an iPad 2 and encountered the same issue reported by Larry (Scopeguy45) - The Video App and Home Share streaming of Video content worked well right up to the point that I updated to iOS6 on this device.

Slow learner I suppose...Should have waited a while for the bugs to work out of the new release. I will be very interested to learn what Apple Support come back with, if you are kind enough to share.
