Apple Maps are absolutely horrible

I think this is the worst Apple app I have ever seen. In just one day I've found:

  • The maps (I'm in Ohio) are poorly rendered
  • There are many misspellings - just in my city
  • The gridwork while the maps are loading is annoying
  • Most businesses that used to be listed are missing. Just blank spots on blank-looking roads. The maps, even in business districts, look like wastelands.
  • Routes - First you have to "search" for a destination, then click the Route arrow. But then for the Start window, you are restricted to just "Current Location"!!!!
    • There is no way to put in bookmarks, recents, or contacts in the Start window! If you don't want "current location" you have to manually type an address in. UNACCEPTABLE!! This is definitely a bug.
    • For that matter, once you have a route page with Start and End, there is no way to access a list of contacts, bookmarks, or recents for EITHER the Start or End window!
  • Today I tried to load a route, and a bar came up saying "routing apps" and then showed me a screen of routing apps and reviews !?
  • 3D is a joke. "Flyover" only works in giant cities, and even then I see a blank grid for at least a minute before it finally renders.

Is there any way to keep the ios 6 update but go back to the great Google Maps??

If you're having issues with Maps on your Mac, you might want to post in the relevant Mac forum. This is the iPhone forum. And, this thread was last active a year and a half ago. If you want Apple to know how you feel, use this page:

Did the iOS version of Maps get off to a rocky start? Sure. But that was five years ago, when this thread was first started. At least in the U.S., it is now a worthy competitor to Google Maps and, in some ways superior. Google Maps has a weird tendency to reroute me to nonexistent roads especially in industrial areas. Also, Google Maps can't pronounce a significant number of roads and towns in my region, ones that Apple Maps has no problem managing.

It truly is a joke app.

Why even bother to compete with Google's product if it can't be made to be reliably operational?

Horrible, badly conceived, next-to-useless, an open admission of failure.

Even if you go through the fix of logging into System Preferences, turning off Location Services in (Security & Preferences), navigating to Network>Advanced>TCP/IP, hitting "Renew DHCP Lease", going back to Security & Preferences and switching back on Location Services, it'll only work until you shut your computer off. Next time you turn it on, you'll need to go through the whole process.

And, naturally, you cannot delete this crippled app from your Mac.

Like a laptop with only Thunderbolt 3 ports, requiring extra adapters or several hundreds of dollars of outlay per replaced peripheral device, Maps was like the early signal that Apple was gearing up for a series of lame disappointments.

I agree fully! This is a terrible product. The team that built this should be fired. Besides the fact that it doesn't have street view and routing using transit systems, it is very poorly executed product and doesn't have basic features that one has got used to. Steve Jobs must be turning in his grave. Tim, please start reviewing your products, not just the supply chain!

Thank goodness I am not the only one - I have spent hours trying to get street view to work to realise there isn't one - even when I view google maps from iPad I can't find a street view function anymore!

Apple what have you done the new apple maps seems to be a poor version of google earth with a useless 3d map option, poor satellite imagery most places I have viewed in the UK except London! You have a useless fly over view for very few places and no street view!

Very poor product - I thought apple were good at this sort of thing!

Yes, there are issues with the maps and they could have done it better and they will improve it. But seriously, you can't believe Google Maps was always correct? I have seen incorrect roads and turns on google maps too. Google maps is an old product and therefore more mature - like iPhones and iOS are mature in their categories (phone and mobile OS). I'll give it a chance and let apple improve it.

As for other posts - has it occurred to you that your connection speeds could have something to do with rendering speeds? I don't have the issues you talk about - like the grid showing for a minute before showing the maps.

And yes, flyovers are for big cities only. If you think of it logically, you would think that would be the case. And frankly - what is the real purpose of flyovers besides being a gimmik which is short lived?
