Q: VGA Projector problem since 10.8.2 update

My macbook retina does not work with my Viewsonic vga projector since the 10.8.2 update. It recognizes the projector but both screens go black and I can only see a huge cursor. Is this happening to anyone else? Is there a fix?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Interesting - some are reporting similar symptoms when connected through hdmi.

I am having the same problem. I have read the linked forum. There was a suggestion to reset the pram, but everybody on there said it didn't work. I am hoping Apple comes out with a fix soon. I use my machine for work and need to demonstrate software to a large audience.

I've been reading that other thread and I'm going to try and see if booting into safe mode will work. My projector is at school so I'll have to try tomorrow. I have Windows 7 on bootcamp but had problems with the projector on that also. I could see the screens but it everything was HUGE and it wouldn't let me adjust the resolution.

Update: I tried this and did get color but the scree was horribly mangled and I couldn't click on anything. So booting into safe mode to run the projector isn't working.

Update: My Sony does not work, but my Dell projector does, so it is projector specific. I spent 45 min on the phone with Apple support. They ended up doing a system logging so they could get the information back tothe engineers. I'm guessing I will hear something by the end of the day. Not neccessarily a fix, but at least a status update.

Same problem. MBP Retina and Epson projector thru VGA-Thunderbolt. Black screen with strange graphic errors when clicking around.

I tried with two different projectors and it acts like it is connectng to the projector, but then fails. It doesn't show up as a secondary display under the Display system preferences. I tried rebooting with the projector plugged in, and it showed up momentarily but then dropped. This is clearly a bug... particularly interesting since it is listing as a bug they were FIXING in 10.8.2! I have never had a problem with this before in 10.8.1 or before.

I did install the firmware update when I did the software updates, if that matters. On the bright side, I pulled out my iPad and used it today for all my presentations and it went great. Maybe the silver lining is that I'm not procrastinating about putting all my files on it and using it with my projector instead of carrying my computer to work everyday.

I also have this problem on my Retina MacBook Pro with 10.8.2.  When I plug in my projector both screens go back (but I do occasionally see a huge mouse cursor).

Also having problems since updating my Retina Macbook Pro to 10.8.2.  When I try to use the Epson projector in the room where I teach, I get a black screen.

My Retina MBPro exhibits same symptoms.  Worked fine until recent update.  I was suspecting the MDP to VGA adapter (or the projector). My old 17in. MBPro worked fine in same setting.  Presently working around w/HDMI to a VGA box from Monoprice.  How long to correct?

Update: I have a fix! (At least it worked for me)

The two files that were isolated are:

    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/   "com.apple.windowserver.XXXXX.plist"

After pulling out these files to the trash can, please reset the PRAM per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

In order to find the second file, go to the Go Menu on the top of the mac, hold Option on the keyboard, and then click on the Library.
