Apple ID and Telephone Number

What happened to the unification of Apple ID and telephone number? I've upgraded to IOS 6 and latest Lion, 10.8.2, and there appears to be no merging of Apple ID and telephone number as promised. Am I missing something?

I upgraded a couple of days ago and just started using Messages today. The first time I saw on-screen evidence of the merger of Apple ID and my phone number was when I first launched Messages and it prompted me for permission to do so. My experience is that the unification is in place and it works well.

Have you tried Messages yet? I hope this is of some help.

Hi,

I did OS X 10.8.2 first then the iOS updates to two phones and an iPad.

As I added/updated the iOS 6 devices I was asked If I wased to add the iPhone number and various emails I had tested in various places on one phone.

Hi,

Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage Account.

Use the Add email and type iPhone Number.

Hi,

I have since managed to test this myself after I had seen it it in another post.

Like You I got this Messages that the Number was being treated as an Email and "Verification email had been Sent" but it just stays greyed out.

I have two iPhones (G3S) and had lined one Apple ID as an Additional Email on the other.

When I updated to iOS 6 (Having done OS X 10.8.2 first) I was asked by both Phones if I wanted to link the Numbers in Messages (i.e. for each phone the same alert pop up appeared asking to accept linking or the Apple ID's and iPhone Numbers whilst I was in Messages on the Mac).

I declined linking the second Number this way.

In trying to "unlink" one of the additional emails on one Phone I got a warning to say it would be removed from All devices.

I have yet to see if you can delete one name then re-add it to the devices (or app) you want to use it On.

Hi,

Remove the Apple ID from the iPhone.

This should unlink the iPhone Number to the Apple ID.

Then Add the Apple ID and then DO NOT accept the iPhone Number as a "Can be called On " option.
