Safe Mode - Boot / Start Up HELP!

A friend of mine's MacBook Pro would not boot properly.

The grey screen would come up and the spinning disc would just keep going around.

After a little online research, I restarted it in safe mode, but the progress bar was not moving.

I then restarted it, but holding down the Shift + Command + V so that we could see the progress.

It went into almost an MS DOS window, showing all the different boot ups.....it now seems to be running a seemingly endless booting up/disc scan process, still in that MS DOS type window.

How long should it take?!?! It's been running for ages already....must be half an hour or more already.....

Thanks

Is it making any progress, or has it stalled?

Safe boot does take longer, but not 2 hours.

If you can't get in thru safe boot, which just starts essential applications, and not 3rd party software, you might want to take it in toan Apple store or an AASO (authorized Apple service provider.

If you are terminal proficient (understand and know code) you can do a single user boot, which will take you to the terminal, and you can enter code.

But other than that, you have done the things, that takes me to te end of what I can suggest.

Sorry I could not help you, maybe someone else in the Community might be able to help.

Best of luck

Your comment about an MS DOS window makes it sound like you booted single-user mode instead of safe mode. A single-user boot does produce a terminal-like window display with black background. However, it shouldn't take hours. After it is done booting, it should stop with (if I remember correctly) messages about running fsck and mount, and a command-line prompt.

I'm having the same problems with mine. I'm on that MSDOS looking screen. It has the lines after lines saying "sandboxd" and it's been going for so long it's made it to "MacAuthEvent" en1 and it says succeeded. Is it safe to continue or should I power it down? I followed the instructions that said you have to hold down FN+Command+V and this is the screen I've been on.

Command Shift V shows you VERBOSE Mode.

This is what has always been happening "behind the scenes" while the little spinner was spinning.

If it has been "stuck in a rut" doing the same sorts of things for an hour or more, something is clearly wrong. The idea behind verbose Mode is that you might be able to tell what kind of a rut it is stuck in, and do something about it.

What are the last few messages on the screen that seem to be repeating?
