What's the best way to clean a macbook pro hard drive.

It seems to be slow on start up but there are no login items checked. Are those HD cleaners on the market necessary?

No. Try rebooting into the Lion Recovery Disk (command-r) select Disk Utiltiy and run Repair Disk.
