I just spoke to Apple tech support about this. He advised me to restart while resetting the PRAM, then shut down again, then reset the SMC by unplugging the computer for 15 seconds, then plug back in for 5 seconds, then restart.
My screensaver has been working fine ever since doing this.

How do you reset the PRAM (and what is it?).
PRAM is Parameter Random Access Memory.
To reset hold down the following keys while restarting, keep holding them until you hear 2 chimes.

Thanks corvairkid,
What a shame - I thought that was it for a while.
I had already tried a PRAM and an SMC reset but not one after the other.
I tried the Apple fix but as usual the screen saver worked for about two to three hours then reverted to not working again.
Back to the drawing board.
Would be interested to know if this is the same for others?
Sorry to hear that didn't work for you... Still working for me.
Will let you know if the problem returns.
I guess there must be other causes for this.
Please let me know if you find a fix.
Well, I thought my problem was solved. It's not.
Screensaver is not working again.
Looking for advice.
Thought that would be the case. I have come across many and varied problems with macs over the years, this is definitely a strange one. I only just noticed this is in the Macbook Air forum, is that what you have? If it is, a common factor among us is SSD drives, interesting!
I have a new iMac, so not an SSD drive.
I think the problem started shortly after upgrading from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2.
Yeah, I'm having this problem on my SSD Mac mini. I wondered if SSD was the common thread. Anyone else?
I have just come off the phone to Apple - he had never heard of the problem. Best suggestion he had was to re-install back to 10.8. See if the problem goes away, then update to 10.8.2 and see if it comes back. Can we all please submit as feedback to Apple. Looks like some sort of operating system bug to me.
He agreed that I had tried every other trouble shooting method known to man.
I was coming to beleive it was a SSD issue until corvairkid said he hasn't a SSD drive?
The main mystery for me is why it works after a reboot for 2-3 hours and then mis-functions - very strange.

Robert (OP), can you tell us if the mac mini with the problem has a SSD Drive? Can you also see if there is any way you can unmark this as being solved?
Hi Len,
If this thread remains "Solved", we may want to migrate our discussion to another thread that I created a while back to deal with the same issue, but I've yet to find a solution, so the thread is unsolved:

I noticed that when I turned "speakable items" in the universal settings in preferences to Off, my screensaver then worked. For how long is to be determined
I have the issue with a 2009 17" Macbook Pro with the original HD. Not a SSD issue or just for MacAir. ScreenSaver doesn't work for me either.
