Problem has gone away on it's own (magic)
Yeah, I upgraded four Macs to 10.8.2 (iMac, 2 MacBook Pros and Mac mini) and the Mac mini is the only one where the screen saver stopped working.Too bad, because this one is our media center, hooked up to a projector and a small 12" display. The 12" display stays on, displaying the photo montage screen savers, and serves as a photo frame of sorts.
I've tried a bunch of things, including repairing permissions, restarting, changing screen savers, and it started working once, but then it stops working again.
Seems like theres a bug in the timer that tracks mouse inactivity or something, as the screen saver fails to activate.
Just curious as to how my comments solved this for you...since I've still got the problem. 😝
Found a solution that seems to have permenantly fixed things:
I put my mac to sleep and then woke it.
I know that sounds like a crazy solution, but this particular Mac had both the display and the Mac set to NEVER sleep. By simply putting the mac to sleep once (and probably never again)...the problem has now been solved.
Bad news. Screen saver stopped working again.
I am interested in this too - same problem but mac pro after update to 10.8.2. After a re-boot the screen saver starts after the correct time. But only once! After dismissing the screen saver once, it never returns after the correct time has elapsed.
I have tried all I can think of, deleting preferences etc and every thing else I have found on these forums.
I reckon something is running in the background that is tricking the mac into believing it is being accessed by the user. I have looked at activity monitor but am not finding any clues. Maybe something to do with Airplay? My mac is connected to the network via ethernet and not wifi, just wondering if there might be a clue there?
I can manually turn on the screensaver via hot corner or system prefs, and it stays on until I use the mac, as it should, just will not re-activate on its own.
I will try your 'put to sleep' trick and see what happens.
I wish this was not marked as solved, because it certainly is not.
As described by Mark, putting the mac to sleep once appeared to fix the problem. The screen saver worked about four times (instead of once) before fuctionality stopped again. interesting. So, still looking for a fix.
i have this problem on a MacBook Air - screen saver never engages.
I am glad that this is being kept alive. Problem still persists for me too. Booting in safe mode fixes it for a very short time (works for maybe maybe three or four times), then back to normal disfunction.
I have discovered that this is system wide and not constrained to a particular user.
I am wondering what we may have in common, my start up drive is a SSD, and I believe it is on a Macbook Air too, don't know if there is a clue there?
Doesn't seem to be many people with this problem unless there is another, more populated, forum somewhere, but I don't think so.
I have got used to starting it manually whenever I leave the computer, but that is not ideal.
Actually. SSD here as well. Never thought this might have something to do with it.
I have no idea, just trying to find something we have in common.
I can actually boot to a trouble-shooting clean system thatis on a older hard drive. I will boot to that to see if the problem persists. Although it will be a completely alternative Mountain Lion installation.
I will try now.
OK - screen saver worked seven times in a row. So I think it is ok on my clean system hard drive. Not really sure where that takes me to.
I have been wondering about Airplay, Apple TV and home-sharing, are either of you using them, as I am.
I leave Logic Pro open on my mac and I keep getting messages asking me if I want to use Airplay as an audio device.
Maybe I will try turning off home sharing and see what happens, if anything.
What about syncing your iPhone over WiFi?
Turned off home-sharing and the screen saver worked 11 times in a row. I am not sure if it usually stops working after a particular amount of usage or after an amount of time.
Will leave screen sharing off and see what happens.
But defintely interesting.
Ok - stopped working again after working for about 15 times in a row or after about 40 minutes. Back to the drawing board. Turning home sharing back on.
