iTunes Match crippled in iOS 6

iTunes Match functionality seems to be crippled in iOS 6:

  • You cannot swipe delete an individual song from your iPhone
  • You cannot swipe delete an entire album from your iPhone
  • You cannot download an individual track from an album, only the entire album
  • When 'Show all music' is selected, you cannot tell which songs / albums are stored on your phone as it shows them all with no indication of whether they're stored locally or in the cloud.

The impacts of all of this are:

  • Once you have downloaded music to your iPhone, you can no longer delete it. Which means that eventually your iPhone will be full.
  • You cannot decide to download just the tracks you want to listen to from an album any more. It's the whole thing or nothing.

These are serious changes to the way iTunes Match works on iOS devices and there has been nothing from Apple explaining the changes, users have been left to figure it out themselves. I'm not sure I want to pay for this service any more. Anyone else feel the same?

This is totally off topic, but I like Siri. I touch type and I find the iOS keyboards hard to use. I get Siri to do things that would take too long to type.... make to do lists, set reminders, etc. However, my husband is a mumbly Aussie and while he likes Siri, even the Aussie version doesn't understand him well.

My 4s is still on iOS 5 bc I was worried about maps. I also live in NOVA. However i will probably upgrade soon. I find Google Maps (mobile app or web) to be frequently inaccurate and offering poor suggestions how to get somewhere.

Jen,.. I'm glad you are utilizing Siri so well. I don't think upgrading to IOS 6 will be much of an issue regarding Maps in the area where you live. In the last few weeks I had to venture into areas that I was unfamiliar with, Herndon VA, and Upper Marlboro MD. I used turn by turn maps, and was very happy. I was also streaming an album via Bluetooth, and as I got nearer to a turn, the music became more quite as the direction were announced. I thought it was great. I think you will also find the panorama camara feature is awesome, and it is supported on 4s.

Hi All,

Diverting onto Siri with others for a second...I do like, and use, Siri despite it's still being a half-baked functionality. I guess that means it was a quarter baked before iOS 6! Being able to use Siri to open apps in iOS 6 is a nice new feature and I use it a lot. I'm not a big movie person, so that new feature is not so important to me. Being able to access sports is a different story. That is totally cool even though my beloved Yankees bit the dust this year.

OK, enough of that. I found the following short eBook in the iTunes store. It is a nice resource for many of Siri's features. It is free and is called the "Unofficial Guide to Siri." This link will take you to the book if you are interested in downloading it.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the-unofficial-siri-handbook/id482780406?mt=11

Now that the iBooks app has been updated and allows updates to books to happen much more easily, maybe this eBook will get an update based on the new features in iOS 6.

Anyway, I thought some one you might find this information helpful.

Cheers, Mr. Luigi

Hi.

I think I may have stumbled on a solution for you and people who are struggling to load music from their mac/pc onto the phone, or finding that the music they think they've loaded isn't there.

If the 'manually manage music and videos' tab is checked (under summary at the bottom), all music that has previously synced is wiped from the device, and its not very clear that its doing this.

So before ITM is turned on I would suggest syncing music from your PC, but checking that ' manually manage music and videos' is turned OFF and the sync music tab (under music) is checked.

I did find that my iphone was wiped without realising this (as I was trying to load up some none itunes songs onto my phone).

and don't forget to 'apply changes' when prompted

I hope this helps

Hi gmansc1 (and many other contributors)

Similar experience. I've got an iPhone 4, using iOS6 and a subscription to iTunes Match. Despite activating all the switches one would logically use to prevent non-wifi downloads, my phone continued to download my library overnight and into the next day and in addition to depleting a full charge in hours, it wiped out an entire months data plan (never previously done before). I topped up with extra credit and that disappeared promptly. I was unable to use the phone for any internet based work for another two weeks until the next lot of allowance arrived. Very disappointed.

Previously I had spoken to senior tech help for iOS devices re. playlist management. That issue was eventually resolved. Further problems, "big or small," I was told, "get back in touch." However, I tried, via email, with the problem I've outlined at the top of this mail, and I am still waiting.

(Playlist management itself on iOS devices has become counter intuitive. In trying to remove songs from my phone, either because I wanted to change the music or had to create space, I inadvertently deleted playlists that in some cases had been built over years. I've included this particular matter not because it is irreparable, because it isn't, rather, it shouldn't have happened and together it adds up to a lamentable user experience.)

Similarly then, I find the hassle of using iTunes Match are too great and the other issues - so many outlined in this thread by others, things like not knowing whether songs are being stored locally or not - have undermined my confidence in the iTunes Match system.

Good luck,

TT

I haven't been able to download 6.0.1 yet, but I just read this on a tech site. It refers to a change in iOS 6.0.1 that DOES affect iTunes Match. I don't know if the poster of this comment is spot on, but I thought I'd share it with the group and see what you think.

Shame? 6.1 maybe? Oh...wait a minute. Someone already said that.

"Why did they have to "consolidate" the Use Cellular Data switch? I want my iTunes Match to work when I'm on the train or somewhere away from WiFi listening to music, but I only want automatic downloads of software -- which can be huge -- when I'm on WiFi. That granularity allowed me to better manage my data.

Now I have to choose between having all of my music wherever I am, and not risking blowing up my data with a big software purchase (or remembering to switch on and off). This is a minus for me."

Sorry, but this complaint seems a little silly. How big is the typical app? Apparently the average size of games is about 60mb, and I'm sure games are far larger than most apps. So that's about 12 songs. If you've got no problems with downloading songs over cellular, automatic app downloads can't possibly be a big deal. Plus, you can just turn off automatic app downloads.

I agree with many of the complaints about the changes to iTM in iOS6. But Apple is trying to simplify the OS. It's not unreasonable for Apple to consolidate this feature.

Hey Steve, My bad. I understood what you meant and was equally disappointed that iOS 6.0.1 had not addressed the issue this discussion focuses on. I just thought I'd throw out the fact that there was a part of the update that affected iTunes Match and in a way that the author of the comment was not happy about.

Hey Joel, I understand your point. Completely. Again, I just put it out there for others to consider. Having said that, I do think you may be slightly underestimating the potential of an app download depeating ones monthly data allowance by an amount that would create some unhappiness. I am not much of a gamer. Actually, I am not a gamer at all. But, I am an avid outdoorsman. I have many map apps for National Parks and Forrests and those apps run in the 200+ MB range (more since the apps were updated to accomodate the retina displays). I also have an app called Lion Tutor and it is 1.17 GB. I know Apple raised the cap on cellular downloads, but hopefully they didn't raise it above 1.17 GB as there is no way I'd want to be surprised by that big a download on my data account! Anyway, my point is...in general I think you are right. But, in certain circumstances downloading an App using your cellular data allowance could be a real downer (no pun intended). I think the author of that quote was just saying that for him it would actually be simpler if he had more control over automatic downloads. Maybe he has some of these high MB retina updated map apps like me.

Anyway...whatev. I remain disappointed that iOS 6.0.1 did not address any issue of significance (IMO) regarding the iTunes Match issue.

Unfortunately the changes to iTunes Match don't seem like they've been picked up by the bloggers or press so I'm not sure the issues are getting out and back to Apple. Anyone here know any of the bloggers?:)

As for control over data downloads over cellular - having finer control is critical as long as we are charged by the amount of data we use. There's an infinite number of scenarios where we might prioritize one kind of download over another or rather not pay for x type of download to save those bits for y kind of download. If I'm paying for something I want as much control over what I'm paying for as possible, especially because I have zero control over the size or amount of data a developer might code. I don't want to pay for an app company's inefficent coding or bugs or background processes, etc, etc.

I have one more, but HUGE problem, and till now I didnt find any more ppl having the same... On my new iPhone5, I have downloaded many songs by DL album, stopped what I didnt need (about 1 hour per DL to have what I will need), BUT I have two accounts. Signing in with the other, and signing back, turning ON itunes match again DELETES MY ALL MUSIC I DOWNLOADED BEFORE. Got to start over and over again, making me tons of download data etc. If this is a feature not a bug, I want my money back, this is not, what I was paid for.
