Will I lose all my text messages?  my calendar?  are those typically backed up?

I wish somebody had warned me to backup before starting this!

Syncing will safeguard the following data:

    • Music
    • Videos
    • Photos
    • Contacts
    • Calendar
    • Bookmarks
    • Settings (mail account settings, device settings, etc.)

Backups, on the Other Hand, will safeguard the following data:

    • Text messages
    • Notes from the notes application
    • Locations from the maps application
    • Call history
    • Contact favorites
    • Cookies
    • Settings (sound, widget, network)
    • Photos (Yes, they get backed up and synced)
    • And most importantly it will store the data of third party apps!

Found that list online - I have "restored" my iPhone once, and lost all my text messages so I'm not sure if that's accurate or not, this website didn't have a date listed

I bet I've lost everything, start from scratch.  Do I have a choice?  Do I have to restore if all I see is the cord on the phone?

  • cableknit Level 1 Level 1

That part I can't really answer - I have the cord stuck on my screen and no options anywhere to restore my phone; if I had the option, I'd do it and skip installing ios6, just go back to ios5.x

When you plug in to sync, does it automatically backup or do you have to intentionally do that?  Cableknit, you are being so helpful.  Thank you.

That's a very good idea, and wait for the bugs to get worked out.  From the looks of the comments in the forum, iOS 6 is bad news.  I wonder if that would save more data... wishful thinking.

Wish I could call somebody!! lol

I have this same problem with the iPhone not recongized and frozen on the cable screen. How do you restore your phone when neither the computer nor the phone can do anything? I already tried re-installing iTunes & all the Mobile Device Support/Device Drives on my computer and nothing has changed.

  • beachaddict Level 1 Level 1

I assume you've restarted the computer and re-connected the phone.  Also, the reset technique didn't work for me, but it's worth a try if you haven't already.  That's all I can think of to do.  I'm a green user and have no experience to draw on.  This is rude awakening, though!!

beach - not sure if yours does it automatically but mine does

I just got off the phone with Apple, and despite doing all the button pushing and restarting my computer, she decided my final step would be to uninstall programs in the following order (and then reinstall iTunes):

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923?viewlocale=en_US

I would suggest calling and letting them know you are having the same problem (1-800-MY-IPHON) so that way you can get a ticket ID and can go back to the last step you were on with customer service without having to sit through the whole "turn your phone off, then back on, now plug it in, does it work?" spiel they have to put you through.

Good luck, I'm uninstalling all this stuff now and then reinstalling *cross fingers*

I almost positive I don't have my phone backing up to icloud, and if I had to do something intentional on my pc, I didn't do it there either.  There's definitely a learning curve for these things!  Thanks for the suggestion.  This is my only phone so I'm having my daughter call from her phone and we are communicating through email.  Good luck! Hope that works for you.

Yeah it didn't work for me lol. I'm back on the phone with Apple and they keep telling me to try all these steps that they already have listed online, so we're having to sift through all the information. I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to have to mail my phone in. Not happy!

It just occurred to me that if I uninstall every trace of iTunes, won't that erase my backup?

Where does iTunes store the backup?  If you have time, please let me know how that worked for you.

That's NOT good news!  I'm so sorry.
