Trouble loading ipod video... it freezes

I had trouble loading songs on my new ipod video, I had become accusomed to just connecting my ipod photo and having everything automatically update.
What would happen is that itunes would load about 4 gigs and then just get hung up, causing itunes to freeze. Here's the work-around if you have this trouble. Change your settings to manual control. Then drag and drop albums and songs in groups of about 100 songs ea. Its a little tedious if you have a lot of music, but it worked. After the bulk of stuff was on my ipod, I switched back to auto update and it is working sweet. This info took me about 10 hours to discover!
