"Other" includes everything that is not audio, photos, apps, or books. It includes videos, messages, app data, and iOS itself.

It may be normal for your iPhone. iOS 6 is bigger and will account for at least some of the difference from what it was before.

Settings > General > Usage > Storage shows you how much data each app uses.

If it still doesn't seem right you can force a recalculation of "other" by the following

  1. Connect the iPhone to a computer and launch iTunes
  2. Select the "Summary" tab and scroll down to "Options"
  3. Un-check the box "Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected", then check it again
  4. Sync the iPhone.

After downloading ios 6 both my 3GS iphone, "other" has become 8.5 gb.shown by its memory summary. I forced a reclalculation by going to settings in iTunes and unchecking/rechecking "Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected" and sync'g it again. Still shows 8.5gb being used. Deleted all videos, movies, etc. Still no change. Is this normal and how can i lower it?

I have the same problem. I set up my iphone 5 as a new phone. Then restored from a back up, and had 3.8GB of 'other' after, when on my 4s it was tiny. Ive tried everything including a restore several times, a set up from new completly (install apps one by one etc) but it has now got worse since the last restore and is at 4.6Gb now, yet nothing has changed.

I can't tick the box you guys suggest as it is greyed out and wont let me. Im at the end of my tether as to how to get this down. My ipad has near enough identical apps etc and the 'other' is sod all compared to my phone.

I did that and it only made mine worse. I have since set up my phone as new for the second time, and it is at .97GB. The moment I add a non standard wall paper it goes to 1.35GB. If I remove it it goes to .97 again. However, if I make no changes and sync again and again, it changes every time between 1.2 and 1.35GB. I have no music or photos in camera roll (2000 odd in a synced folder only) and only 4GB of apps, still at 1.35GB.

God knows what was causing 4.6GB before as it wasn't music, messages, videos or photos etc as I removed the lot. I think it's a joke that we can't access 'other' and decide what we want on there or clean it up some how.

So this top of the range phone, that can('nt) do everything, is supposed to be restored every few months to get rid of data we have no idea what it is? Thats just stupid. Why is there no answer to this? No apple support? Mine has gone up again to 2.92GB over the last two months and i have deleted everything. I have no idea what causes it, and no one else does. Why has apple no made a access or cleaning tool of some sort for this problem? Or is that too easy?
