I too am unable to update my iPhone 4 as everytime I I attempt to install iOS6 I get the following error mesage.

"The iPhone "XXXXXXXXX's iPhone" cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later"

Rinse, repeat..........

My iTunes is up to date, my Mac OS is up to date, my firewall is turned off. Restarts do nothing to both the phone and my laptop.

Any suggestions?

My solution was to connect to a WiFi network. I did a full back up in iTunes but then updated my OS via WiFi to iOS 6. While I realize a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes on iOS6, for iPhone 4 (not 4S) users, there doesn't seem to be that many "must haves" in this iOS. It appears to be very stable but not much different. I have to admit, I really like the "Do Not Disturb" settings though 🙂

I have become increasingly frustrated with Apple lack of documentation on their products. While many of their software and hardware products are intuitive many are not. For example, I couldn't and still cant get any iOS device to upgrade on my MacBook Pro. I can download the iOS update software but once it is downloaded I get User uploaded file

I doesn't matter which device, iPod, iPhone nor iPad. they all do the same thing. BTW, none have ever been jailbroken. Searching the dicussion groups returns hundreds of people having the same problem. No satisfactory solution has been given for many of these folks, myself included. I currently have a bricked iPod that is in recovery mode. I plugged it in to my Mac to sync and got the notice about a newer OS. I backed it up, downloaded the new software and as soon as it started the install, BOOM, the install couldn't complete because of the above messege. I had the same problem with my iPhone 4 and iPad.

I have followed all of the steps on the "More Information" page (most are so vague they can't be addressed in the first place). I reset my network settings, no luck. Updated to Mountain Lion, no luck. I can go to another compluter and have no issues but on my MBP I can't connect to the server. Doesn't matter what WiFi network I am on, nor the time of day. No luck. Don't use any Security software, never have, Firewall is disabled. No luck. Went to the Apple Store and the "Genius" I spoke to looked like a "deer in the headlights".

The search continues.........

Success!

Well it wasn't easy to find but I have managed to restore my iPod and update my iPhone. It turned out I had a corrupted Hosts file that was pointing iTunes to the wrong server. I was able to delete my Hosts file in >Library/private/etc/hosts. This file is hidden but I was able to "unhide" it using the Terminal. I think it would be better to have you research using the Terminal on your own as I barely know what I am doing!

I have been unsuccessfully trying to update my iOS to iOS 6.0.1 using wifi. I also have enough space in my iPhone 4. I followed the way phone updates the software, so everything downloades and soon after the message, "preparing to install" comes, iPhone shows the error saying, "an error occurred in installing the iOS 6 software". Please help! Thank you.
