What application are you trying to launch?
You imply this is a second-hand computer. Is it?
Oops. I thought I was posting this under Quick Time questions, so left out the fact that the application is Quick Time.
It's a new machine. I phrased it that way because I'm trying to transition from Windows. Anyway, I click on Applications, then on Quick Time, and the Quick Time just sits there. Nothing. Other applications have opened OK, so far.

I see, thanks. Opening the QuickTime Player app does not do anything other than open the program itself.
Its icon will appear in the Dock
... and its menu should appear
... then it will patiently wait for you to do something.
You can record audio, make a screen recording, video yourself with your MacBook Pro's built-in camera, or open and edit an existing QuickTime movie you already made or that someone emailed you.
If you were expecting garish and meaningless animations, that's only because you're accustomed to Windows.
😉
if your trying to play a Quicktime video file then double click the file and it will play back
Thank you. Not everything is covered in my "Switching to a Mac for Dummies". I appreciate you response to what, no doubt, is a frequent newbie question.
Alex
And thank you too. Sometime I'll get the hang of this. It's been less frustrating than Windows, ever though I've been able to suffer through most of their problems for years.
Alex
You're welcome Alex.
