OS 10.7.5 update has trashed my macbook air.

OS 10.7.5 update has trashed my macbook air. It now takes ages to boot and does not shut down. How can I restore my computer? Also textedit can't open files saying I don't have permission. I can cat them in Terminal fine and the permissions are OK in Get Info.

First boot up in Safe Mode and see if the problems still occur?

Restart holding the "shift" key.

(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)

If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and disable any third party login items. Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.

You may also have to rebuild your ~ directory ACLs and permissions

If that doesn't work...

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.

The screen should give you these choices...

Restore from TM backup

Reinstall Mac OS X

Get help online

Disk Utility

First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.

Try downloading the 10.7.5 combo updater here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582 and running that. Many complaints about problems with both this week's 10.7.5 and 10.8.2 updates seem to be associated with using Software Update rather than a downloaded updater and the combo version has worked twice with both Lion and ML for me.

Thanks macjack and FatMac\>MacPro ,

After repaiing permissions in disc utility I couldn’t log in again, and couldn’t understand rebuilding ACL permissions as I had printed out your replies and had no access to my email to get the link.

After trying to install the update from the combo updater thing got even worse, next I did a reinstall from recovery, which spent six hour downloading then failed with no error. I did an erase of my partition and reinstall which then failed but gave me an error about encryption. So I erased the whole drive and reinstalled. This worked. I then ran the update again and it was broken the same as the first update!

After another erase and reinstall I decided not to update, so I stated the restore from time machine. After this completed it crashed with the error message saying I must power off and then on again. restarting didn’t help.

After another erase of the whole drive, and reinstall I did a partial restore from time machine and am running again.

However, I don’t want to attempt another upgrade to 10.7.5. Will Apple comeout with a statement about what went wrong? When will you fix this update?

In the mean time I suggest to any owners of MacBook Air to avoid this update.

For reference this is my model:

Model Name: MacBook Air

Model Identifier: MacBookAir4,1

Processor Name: Intel Core i5

Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 3 MB

Memory: 4 GB

Boot ROM Version: MBA41.0077.B0F

SMC Version (system): 1.74f1

Cheers.

FYI for future use if necassary.

Consider having a bootable clone on an external drive in addition to the Time Machine backup. It makes reverting to a pre upgrade hard drive state very easy plus is great for trouble shooting.

Some references for information.

This update crashed my MacBook Pro, late 2011, upon attempted restart, 5 times.

This is completely unacceptable. I restored from Time Machine backup, which was

most tedious, and should be completely unnecessary.

No mention by Apple of the faulty nature of this humongous appendage to be found.

What sort of foolishness is this? Top dollar paid, yet shoddy follow-up, immediately

thereafter? I am a Certified IT Tech, so give me no "it's my fault" folderoll.

Not even addressed by Apple, as if this mess will 'go away' on its own. What gives?

Seriously. The files in this download are crap. Attempt at your own risk, but set some

time aside, about a day-and-a-half, for failure and self-amelioration. Ridiculous.

The only fix at this point is re-installation? Insanity.

No one needs a "Genius" to click a link, Slick. Perhaps if Apple spent

more attention on its Customers, and less time abusing its Chinese

Slave Labor, we would have a fix, by now.

'Gatekeeper'? Aptly named. After these machines are purchased,

they no longer belong to Apple.

This is MY machine they are screwing with. This kind of Ultimate

Arrogance is typical of Microsoft, more than the allegedly superior

Apple Product.

One expected a 'higher road' from Apple. So, they don't like what we

run on our own Machines? It is absolutely none of their business.

Glassy-eyed acolytes, and sycophants, need not apply.

Circle the Wagons. The Power Grab has begun. Since the Death of

Jobs, Apple is no longer Apple.

You sound more like a Scientologist, than a Tech. Get a "Genius",

indeed.

Hi Chilliboots,

Thanks for your input. I understand that you too are angry about the quality of the 10.7.5 update. However, it is hard enough to find help on here without filling discussions with replies that don’t attempt to solve the problem - sorry about this one. Perhaps you should start your own support request or explain how you fixed your problem.

I do agree that macjack’s second reply suffers from the same problem. His first reply may have been useful so I wasn’t going to put him off posting by replying negatively.

For the record I have found the first line support staff in the Apple stores very helpful, but when they can’t solve a problem the support stops, i.e there is no access through them to engineering staff. Last time I visited I was there for four hours, that was six months ago. The problem was not fixed, they have ignored any further emails I have sent. My assumption is now if I can’t figure it out then they won’t be able to.

The upgrade is demonstrably broken, so I will wait until Apple fix it, then retry using a clone drive as suggested by dalstott.

I do wish Apple would come out and admit it and advise us to wait. But from past form that seems unlikely. Thanks to you all for your help, I consider this issue closed.

I'm sorry I can't give you an answer that will fix the problem. The steps I gave you, in addition to the steps you've already taken, indicate there may be a hardware problem. The reason I asked you to try Safe Mode is becuase it would eliminate interference from other software issues. Often an update that can't be installed normally, will install in Safe Mode. The reason I suggested you bring it to Apple is two-fold...

First, if it is hardware they should be able to diagnose it. Secondly, to demonstrate there may be a problem with the update itself, if hardware is ruled out. It's obvious there's a problem somewhere! Sometimes what one tech support person can't find, another can. At any rate you should open a ticket on it.

If you still have a problem that was never solved (on this Mac?) then that may be contributing to the present problem.

You can always call Customer Relations 800-767-2775. They are very helpful in getting issues resolved. Your Mac should run well and if it isn't you deserve to know why and get the proper service to have it fixed. I hope you get to the bottom of it and the outcome is good.

10.7.5 is a big waste of time. MBP mid2012. Kernal Panics from sleep. Trashed everything they said was causing it but no help. Had a back up from 10.7.4 Carbon Copy Cloner. I won't try again, I'll wait for 10.8.4!

You have serious computer problems then. Hoping, praying and waiting will not fix your problems, just magnify them. Try opening your own thread and explain your own individual issues. Millions of others have had no issue, including my six Macs when I updated them to 10.7.5 before changing most to Mountain Lion.

Good Luck
