MacBook Pro is slow to start and shutdown

Why does my MacBook Pro (with OS X 10.8.2) startup slow and is slow to shutdown?

I have also experienced this with my 2012 SSD MBP. Shutdown and startup to and from useable has increased from less than 10 seconds to more than 30 seconds. Quite annoying, and not why I forked out over 800 smackers for the SSD and 2.7 GHz. Seems interesting - Apple improves features that I don't care about (Facebook integration, etc), then makes changes to battery life *supposedly*, haven't verified it - but my battery life seems as terrible as ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion - then screws up the best feature of 10.8.1 - the incredibly fast shutdown and startup. I timed it at 6 SECONDS before the upgrade.

GFJS - please update us on your findings here.

There's another thread on MacRumors - nothing is coming of it yet, but we might monitor it also -

I do have to say that the OS is perfectly useable, other than the occasional Chrome hiccups and slow shutdown - I can't really find anything else wrong with it.

Many thanks!

I had the same problem but this fixed it for me:

1. Shut down your computer with "Reopen windows when logging..." CHECKED. (The shut down might be slow this time ~ 20 seconds).

The default setting for mine was unchecked. If yours was checked by default, try UNCHECKING it at this point.

2. Turn your computer on

3. Every time you turn your computer off, it should shut down in about 2 seconds. (It does for me)

Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. It didn't take care of my shutdown issue, and I wonder why it fixes some and not others.

I'm also going to lean toward taking back my earlier statement that 10.8.2 was "completely useable" and change it to "10.8.2 might just be a piece of crap"- while I was performing the above steps, I restarted and there was no menu bar visible afterwards. After I clicked around for about 20 seconds, the menu bar finally popped up. It's not the first time I've observed this happening, and it NEVER occurred before 10.8.2.

Shutdown time is more than 30 seconds, which is greased lightning compared to my 2006 Vista PC, but unacceptable for this machine....
