Hi I too have a 4S but auto brightness does work with a little adjustment. If you go into brightness in your settings what you must do is slide the brightness scale to the left ie dimmer. Slide this to the point at which even in the darkest room you would not want it too dim. What I have found on mine that now the phone will adjust from the brightest possible settings all the way down to what you have set as the darkest point. Also you will notice that brightness does not change instantly but gradually over a few seconds. I thought mine was broken too but it does work!

I have the same problem, however mine also has the added feature of setting the brightness to the lowest when I lock my phone. I have tried mrcoates14 method but does not seem to work. Finally, the acing on the cake is that my keyboard is now the slow as a snail after the update. I can't really believe that apple has released a software update with so many bugs, I had some before but not this many. I'm begging to wonder if apple is down falling from its standards that Jobs set.

I just spoke with AppleCare over the phone and together we did a bunch of things that didn't work. Last effort was to restore and reinstall. IT STILL DOESN'T WORK! I also noticed that my coworker's iphone is having the same issue. I wonder if this is an iso 6 bug?

The last remaining option is getting a replacement from the Apple Store. (Thanks to AppleCare) This issue is not that big of a pain in the butt, but it stinks looking at your phone in the middle of the night and being completely blinded until you have to manually adjust the brightness settings.

Guys!! At least I found the answer to this problem, let me explain you ate by step

1.- go to setting

2.- open brightness

3.- place the auto brightness bar where you wish will be the minimal brightness on your iPhone, on the night when there is a minimal light around you, auto brightness will move to the place where you previously you sets the brightness bar

I now that its a great trouble, iOS 6 has amazing features but there is a several deficiencies

I hope my answer can help every body here
