Glad I came across this forum topi!  I thought I was some weird thing about how I plugged my USB cable into my wired Apple keyboard.  I actually was able to pry it loose with a pair of pliers (not the best method...agreed), but now I am worried that I damaged the keyboard.  May have to replug the USB into the keyboard and then take the whole shooting match into the Genius Bar and see what they think!  While I am sorry to see that others are experiencing the same problem, glad its just not me!  Beyond that, kinda liking the Gen 4 iPad!

That is incredible!  But, yup...that's about how stuck mine was!  Thank you for sharing that photo...not sure I would lift my laptop up like that, but it certainly shows the incredible connection between the two.  Perhaps Apple could get into the permanent connection equipment business!!

Yay, I got my replacement cable in today!

Boo, it is now stuck in my laptop!

I don't know why they bothered to send another cable if they are all bad.

Good to know that the replacement cable is pointless to get!  Your experience saved me the hassle.  (Refer to

Anyway, my solution for releasing the USB connector: 1cm or 3/8" wide strip cut out from a pop/soda can, inserted into bottom of USB port.

Cable was almost causing a big FIRE!!!

I was charging my iPhone 5 and I saw flame-sparks with very heavy smell coming from the Lightning to USB Cable I bought from Apple.   I was lucky to be right next to the charging place that I saw it.  Otherwise it would be very dangerous and can be a big fire.  It smelled so bad and heavy people from other offices came to my office to see what happened.

I contacted Apple support on 10/24/2012 but they did not replaced my cable yet.   I have never seen a bad customer service like this and very disappointed.

Ever since I've come across this thread I've been trying to get my cable stuck...and you know what?

    I CAN'T.

Not sure if mine is from a different batch you folks got, but mine won't get stuck.

It certainly is stiff, and I DO see the abnormally deep holes, but it won't stick.

Genuine brick, my Acer tower usb plugs, my aftermarket usb brick, my dads laptop.

I'd say at worst is the Apple usb AC Plug which is stiff about 7/10 wise, whereas everything else is just a 5/10 stiffness compared to a 3/10 NORMAL tension level.

See my post above, try putting it in a combo port.  USB/SATA.  Mine get's stuck there, but not the plain USB on the HP laptop.

I bought my iPhone 5 yesterday. Not knowing about this problem, I plugged the USB cable it came with into my SUV's USB port to charge. It won't come out. This is ridiculous. I just got off phone with apple support. They will swap cables with me once I get the cable out.  1.  I can't get it out, or I wouldn't be calling. 2. What do I do till then?  I need to charge my phone and I'm not going to hang out in my car all day. 3.  The second guy I talked to was a condescending jerk. Like I wanted to have a crappy cable mess with my $50,000 vehicle.  The solution I was given was to take my vehicle to dealership.  (In a city 2 hrs away)   Thanks Apple.  Needless to say, I'm getting my wife an android.

Try slipping s piece of thin plastic in the port to raise the fingers a little.  Something like a piece of a red solo cup (my favorite shim material).

Why should we try getting other tools out to resolve these connection problems. Why can't apple sort this out?  How do we make this a priority.

  • borse2008 Level 1 Level 1

Why can't apple sort this out its probably the most replied and read thread it's disgusting that apple don't even look at there own community forum.

I tried the red solocup idea (didn't have a red one but a clear plastic piece one) and it worked like a charm.  It took a few tries to get it right, but it came out with out damaging my usb port.  I''l be trading this one in for a new one next week.  i hope they aren't all bad.

@borse2008, My post was not intended as a solution to the problem, only a solution for @eskamoses to get the plug out without damage.

I just got my iPad 4 Verizon version in and after fighting trying to insert the cable into my Mac Pro I came here.

Looks like I'm not alone. Mine won't plug-in to the USB ports on the front of my Mac Pro. It plugs in kinda tight to the charger but not any other USB ports.

The plastic inside the plug looks too thick?

    Hi everyone,

I had the same problem with my connector in my wired keyboard but is managed to pull it out rather easy after all. The biggest problem ocurred when I plugged in the USB in my car. When I tried to pull it out this morning I pulled the whole connector socket that's in my car out of the dashboard. So I had to put pressure on the socket while tinkering with the USB connector after a few minutes I managed to pull it out.

I think one thing that does not help the problem is the very short part of the USB connector which you can grip with your fingers (white bit in between the metal and the cable). It is very hard to get a grip on it which together with the tight fit creates the problem.

All be aware and be carefull. I hope Apple will fix this problem in future cables.
