Guys try this:

1. Restart your phone

2. Remove your sim card+holder.

3. Once your phone boots, you will hear sounds.

4. Check all sounds, music, etc. If all are working then your problem is solve. ^_^

5. Put back your sim card.

I noticed that everytime i restarted my phone, I can hear sounds for some few seconds only. It's gone once the phone detects mobile carrier. So do the other way around:

Restart>>>>Remove Sim+holder>>>>Check all sounds>>>>all ok?>>>>Insert Sim

This method worked for me.

Hope it helps.

iPhone 4s

IOS 6.0.1

Working with Apple Teir Two support I have found that an alarm app is causing the problem. I uninstalled Nightstand Central and haven't had any problems since. I first updated to iOS 6 on an iPhone 4. After lots of fooling around Apple replaced the iPhone 4 for free. Same problem. I bought and iPhone 5 and gave the iPhone 4 to my wife.

She doesn't use Nightstand Central so she doesn't have it installed. She hasn't had a problem in the three months she has had the phone. The same problem I had constant trouble with sometimes daily on that phone.

As for the iPhone 5 I have had the same problem over and over until I removed Nightstand Central. iOS 6 changed the way the time and sound interfaces work within the system. Nightstand Central doesn't work right with the new programing scheme. If you have an alarm application like Nightstand Central running, try uninstalling it and see if the "No Sound" issue goes away.

I have written the author of Nightstand Central twice have yet to receive a reply.

Please post your findings

Do you use Nightstand Central? I found that it is the problem on my iPhone 5 and on my old iPhone 4. If you use the alarms in the Clock that comes with iOS 6 there is no problem but it doesn't work the same and I don't like it much, But.... it works.

Try unintsalling your alarm app and see if the trouble goes away. It took me weeks to get to this fix working with Apple Tier Two support.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip!

I have one Alarm app called Nag. I'll uninstall it and see how it goes for the next few days.

That's not the problem. I don't have any apps for alarms, and I still have problems with the sound going out on my iPhone.

I had the 3GS iPhone. Worked fine before updating to iOS 6, then the sound when to pot after the update. Very random. The only thing that would turn the sound back on, although it was very temporary, was to turn the phone off then back on again.

I got a new iPhone 5. Worked ok for a few weeks, now the sound is doing exactly the same thing as on my 3GS. It is still random, and still will only be temporarily fixed by turning the phone off then on.

I don't have the Nightstand Central app you mentioned. If I use the alarm, and can't really now because it's unreliable because of the sound going off, I use the one that comes with the phone.

After trying just about every suggestion in the forums, I agree with you.

Today I unplugged the phone from the car. I tested it and sound was working fine. About 10 minutes later I received a text message and the sound was gone. I went into settings and moved the "Ringer and Alerts" slider under "Sounds". The sound came back. Just like you said. No rhyme or reason for the loss of sound.

I know one thing for certain. Prior to iOS 6 I did not have this issue.

Hello

Just got an iphone 4s and lost my sound very quickly - so annoying. I tried using a dry toothbrush to sweep out the dock hole at the bottom and it came straight back on all of it e.g. the typing click noise, playing music, phone beep as I press keypad - whole lot that was missing ! Yay! Try this low tech version - hope it works for you. From bits I read from googling the prob its all to do with the phone thinking you have it on a dock because of rogue miniscule fluff caught in base dock hole that you can't see.

Hope it lasts on my phone - will post if it does not! Good luck to everyone!

I had this problem again recently and I used the System Status app to look at the iOS log file. There was an error about being unable to lock the sound system as it was already locked. Apparently what's happening is that an app is taking control of the sound, but not releasing it so no other sounds will work. For me restarting my phone works, but if the app is one of those dumb apps that always run on startup (usually VOIP apps, but any app can register to run when the phone turns on), then your sound won't work even after rebooting the phone.

The only solution in that case is to find the problem app and delete it. You can use SysStatsMon or any other system info app to see what apps are running in the background.

In my case, I'm almost positive Relax Melodies (various versions) is causing the problem for me as I always notice this problem after running that app (though not every time the app runs).

So, updated to 6.1 and still no sound on my 3GS. That's so frustrating...

Have 3GS as well. Upgraded to iOS 6.1. Still same issue. Went down to my car and plugged phone in. After it saying device unsupported (ugh!), I unplugged and replugged it in. Now it was magically supported and started playing music. Unplugged it and lost sound. Went into Music and played a song. Sound magically starts again. Same old issue.

Something definitely changed in 6.1 for me. When I connect to bluetooth and I'm not connected to car, music starts playing right away in bluetooth. I'm able to switch over to phone or bluetooth. That wasn't the case for 6.01.

I'm real tired of this. I'm still under warranty until May, so I'm going to Apple store tonight. We'll see what they have to say. I've done everything imaginable, reset all and including restoring the phone as new yesterday to 6.1!

Just real tired of this. The phone is completely useless if you have to mess with it so sound works again.

Same problem here, i upgraded my Ipad2 and still the same.

I'm suspecting it has to do with bluetooth and most probably SprinBoard, although i NEVER use bluetooth on my ipad.

But i'm trying to monitor the system log to figure out what's crashing and even though my bluetooth is disabled it still tries to attach itself to bluetooth and then later it detects that the power/state has changed.

So i suspect it that's why some of you have issues with external speakers/docks and some of us still have the problem even though we don't use any of the above.

Set up a Genius appointment and went to the Apple store. First time in an Apple store. I was impressed with the service and all around experience. The representative thoroughly checked the phone, ran some diagnostics and in the end replaced it with a new phone. Great experience. Apple deserves credit for treating it's customers well.

I know other folks have had their phones replaced and then experienced the exact same issue again. I'm crossing my fingers. I will say this, thus far it connects to my car without the unsupported error. I'll have to give it some time and see what happens.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the issue, but the Model ID is different in this phone? The phone from Apple is model MC555LL/A. Prior ATT iPhone was model MC640LL/A. Might not mean anything, but I thought it was interesting.
