I've been looking online for solution, but nothing helps!! All volume bottoms are on high, the mono sound is off and I have several times rebooted the phone.. All without luck. I believe it's software related. No issues with 5.1.1 ever. If I have it plugged into my Honda, I can't see the ringer volume bar. Unplug it and I can see the bar. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it happens, but for sure it's always when it's plugged in to charge or docked. I've tried restore, reset and no help.

This was my first iPhone and it just may be my last. Sound is very important, otherwise the phone is useless. A family memeber has the wifi issue and can't access his wifi at all. What's really surprising is apple won't come out with an update to address these issues. We'll have to wait for 6.1 and hope they're fixed. If not, we wait again? That's really ridiculous.

This issue really doesn't have any absolutes, like it only happens when plugged in, or after accessing Safari, etc.

It happens to me all the time. I did a reset of my settings and I thought it was helping, but it didn't.

I'll be typing a text or email and the key sounds will fade in and out of volume, disappear altogether, then come back on right in the middle of my message.

It doesn't matter if I've plugged it in or turn it off then back on. It's totally random.

I can't rely on it anymore for an alarm to get me up in the morning because I never know if the sound will be on or off.

Come on Apple, fix this already!

I have a 3GS by the way and never had any problems before the software update.

Problem:

- All aspects of iPhone 4 work except sound from bottom speakers from certain apps

Details:

- Incoming sound from ringtone works, call speaker on phone works

- Keyclicks do not work always

- iPhone connected to an aftermarket stero system using the 30pin in my car works flawlessly

-> If you are experincing this than, this is not a hardware problem, your speakers work but it seems as if something is telling iPhone OS that you are connected to another audio output

But Try:

- Cleaning the dock with a bit of alcohol using a ear swab (both the headphone jack and the dock) - don't be agressive and have. [didn't work for me]

- When you have your iPhone charged plug it in while playing music, slightly tip the charger to see if it detects sound [worked for me, made me really puzzled as to whether it was hardware or software now..]

Conclusion:

Since sound on iPhone running iOS 6 works flawlessly in my car using the connector, Call ringtones work fine, speakers and the dock is not a problem. Since this happened after the update, as we have established and contrary to the GeniUSes, this is purely a software issue. Absolutely Unacceptable.

Hopefully Apple fixes this prior asap, or else http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T4WB2zfmps

I had this exact same issue.

I took the problem to the Apple Store and they exchanged my phone because it was within the replacement warranty period. I mentioned to the Genius that this occured immediately after an iOS update and there was much talk about the issue on forums. He brushed the issue off and said it was a hardware problem.

Let's face it. Apple does like the 30 pin setup and so they changed the engineering to avoinf further issues.

It is clear that Apple realizes that this is an issue and would rather deal with it through hardware exchanges.

They've used the 30 pin setup for years. This wasn't a problem when iOS 5.1.1 was running on these devices. I could get a replacement as well, but if the same thing is going to happen again what's the point? The sheer amount of posts in this thread point to it being a software issue. I believe it is as well. If 6.1 doesn't fix the issue, I'll take it in then and hope for the best.

I got my ipad 3 replaced yesterday for this problem. Had a full 64g of stuff on it so the restore was a pain. Also lost the ghost armor backing I had just had reinstalled. The good news as that sound seems to be working again. I wonder if the problem is both software and hardware. Perhaps they added logic to "better" detect if you are docked that is getting hosed up by minor flaws in the connector that were not a problem before.

Pretty sure this is just a firmware problem, the likelihood that hundreds of people simultaneously broke their input jacks after updating is absurd. A fix will come, eventually. But, from what I've seen/read most people have been able to hack a solution together. My fiancées' 4s no longer has the issue, but had it for a few days. We tried everything outlined in this thread and anything else we could think of to deactivate the audio, sorry I don't have more details on what definitively fixed our device.

This issue has really been getting on my nerves. I never ever had this problem on my 3rd gen iPad until the iOS6 update. From the beginning I was having issues, but I didn't find much about it when I first experienced it in September, only 1 or 2 articles. Sound would randomly disappear from everything except playback adjusting volume in sound settings or with headphones in. Also, the multitasking bar volume slider would dissapeared, along with the volume level indicator when I pushed the buttons on the side. At first I thought it was an issue with the dock connector, thinking the iPad was docked when it wasn't. I started cleaning out the port with a toothpick or plugging in the connector and jiggling it whenever the sound went away, but eventually that stopped working. The sound issues would then stay for longer than they used to in their own, sometimes over 24 hours.

After a week or so the problem randomly stopped coming up, and I thought it had fixed itself. But it began coming back again after a while, before vanishing mysteriously again. It stopped and started coming some more after that. At one point I even wiped and restored the iPad (major pain in the @$$ that was) and even then it contined returning. By the end of October, it had got to the point where now sound didn't randomly go away anymore, but whenever I turned the iPad on after it had been turned off the sound disappeared almost right away (when I would type the password, the first 2 clicks had time to sound before the volume decided to leave). It would usually come back in an hour or 2, when I plugged it in to charge and I could here the sound that it makes.

Eventually I learned to deal with using headphones. I thought that the issue would be fixed when the 6.0.1 update came out, and it looked like it had been. But today... I turned on the iPad and sound stopped working again! I'm starting to worry that all of us will be stuck with this for a while.

I have a theory about what causes it, but I could just be speaking gibberish, it's only a guess. iOS6 must be having some bizarre issues interfacing with the 30 pin connector. It randomly thinks its coked when it isn't and then turns the sound off. I'm guessing this because I haven't got this issue on my iPhone 5 yet, and I would be very angry if I did. But has anyone he'd this problem on a device with a lightning port (iPhone 5, iPod touch 5g, iPad 4 and iPad mini)? That would disprove my theory. But either way, it looks like Apple is having major quality control issues with their software, from this sound thing to their maps of epic fail. Their hardware is disappointing too, my month old iPhone is scuffed to **** and shipped with a defective power brick. Apple, you really are screwing up big time.

Device: iphone5

Previous OS: iOS5

After downloading and installing iOS6, everything was ok until i found out that the loud speaker (handsfree) speakers arent working. I have reset, fiddled with sounds settings as well as in itunes. I read all forums and everything that i could crawl across the google results... but to no avail! Some even suggested to jail break the device but i am reluctant.

Here's how i fixed my problem:

1) Open an app the does voice calls like skype / yahoo messenger / nimbuzz

2) Call someone from your contact list... on skype you can use Skype Testing Service.

3) Once you are connected and you can hear sound from built-in speakers, change the call settings to Loud Speaker mode.

4) go to your Music app, test you loud speaker if it works by playing a track

*** in theory when I chose loudspeaker while on an active call, the disabled loud speaker by default(caused by iOs6 update) was enabled.

Hope this would help a lot of people.

Good Luck! 😉

This isn’t a hardware issue. I had this problem with my old iPhone 4 after updating to iOS6. I took it to the Genius Bar in Boise 3 times and talked to Apple Care several times. They finally replaced the phone after more than a month fooling around. The new iPhone 4 phone had the same “no Sound” issue after a week or so.

Eventually I bought a new iPhone 5 (two weeks ago). I have already had the same problem with it. It doesn’t have the same docking port as the old iPhone 4 but still has had the same issue twice, so it isn’t the Docking Port.

If you have this problem you can fix it for a while by simply shutting off the phone and turning it back on. This has worked with both my old and new phones.

I went to the Genius Bar with the new phone the second time I had this problem and they said that the problem was software related (probably one of my apps and not iOS6).

They also said that Apple had sold Millions of phones but only a few Thousands had this problem. They said Apple probably wouldn’t fix the issue because it only effects a few (thousands) of us.

What a load of BS.

In an earlier post someone said that they couldn’t trust the Alarm they used to wake them up. My main problem is hearing the alarms coming from “Nightstand Central”. How many of you who suffer from this issue run “Nightstand Central”?

I don’t care if it is an app or iOS6 the problem started with Apple’s updated OS so they should be fixing it and not pointing fingers at other vendors.

After spending hours on the phone with Apple Care and a couple hours at the Genius Bar I wish I had bought the new Nokia Windows Phone as it is probably more reliable.
