I thought I was going crazy! After the update, I've had the same issues. The volume is very low and I've had trouble hearing callers. When I plug the phone into my fm transmitter, I have to turn the car volume to 40! to listen to an audiobook. Occassionally when I press the +volume, it turns the sound off. I've had other issues (Siri) that didn't seem to pop up until after a few days. Super disappointed. I hope there is a fix soon. This is turning into a pain in the ***. One of the things I loved about my phone was hassle free use. Now...

I have an otter box and simply putting the cover on then back off fixes it. I know the cover turns it on and off automatically so somehow this messes with the volume control. Do you have otter box?

I simply went to Settings/General/Reset/Reset All Settings.   It works fine now.

This solved my problem. Thanks. After "fixing" this issue, what is interesting is that in settings under mail I set "no sound" or vibration and it works as advertised but under the Sounds setting it still has new mail producing a "ding".

Yeah, I'm having the same stupid issue. Called tech support and the dumb chick said she never heard of this problem. I'm so upset, updated my software for my Mac, computer went down and now apple wants me to pay $200 to fix it, updated my iPhone and now the sound doesn't work.

Same problem here with an iPhone 4.  To be specific, the problem seems intermittent for me and will sometimes play music and sounds.  Pressing the up or down volume buttons usually triggers the no sound problem when I'm able to get it working.

Sound was never a problem all the way up through iOS 5.1.1.  My decision to upgrade to iOS 6 is regrettable as Apple won't even let us downgrade to a working 5.1.1 while they sort out the problems.

Having similar problems. Since update, my music won't play thru speakers. Volume buttons do nothing. Phone ringer sound comes thru in settings, but not for a phone call. Siri is silent. I can't say the speakers aren't working.

And many problems with th Apple Support Tey are not willing to solve the problem.Iin Germany we have 24 Month service ( Gewährleistung ) but only if it is a hardware problem vrom the beginning.

I think so but not Apple Support does not.

    I have an iPhone 4.

I just thought I'd post here to mention that I too have this frustrating sound issue with a Verizon iPhone 4. It thinks its docked, switching to digital out and back randomly.

It's kind of taking too long to fix this issue, IMO. An iPhone without sound is a seriously crippled device. I've temporarily gone back to Minidisc for music! :)

For anyone who wants to fix this on your own using other people's advice regarding docking, restoring, etc, don't waste your time. It's an iOS 6.0 bug that will only be fixed with iOS 6.01 or newer. With all the fallout over maps and wifi it seems Apple has more important issues so we're left waiting...

Sorry, The fix is to get a new exchange phone.

We had a Genious bar appt and went through a variety of fixes. The Iphone 4 in some circumstances has hardware issues with such a big softare upgrade  (Ios6) that the sound function is disabled or just screws up intermitently. It may relate to a particular batch of phones.

We had to exchange to a new iphone 4 and everything is sweet. It did however cost us $179.

The price you pay for new tech.... but at least we have this kind of technology.

Keep your receipt.  You were ripped off.   This is a simple software bug that occurs when you upgrade.

It has nothing to do with your hardware.

Yeah, I'm not buying a replacement iPhone because Apple's software mistakes destroyed one of its major functions. That's...ridiculous. The sound worked fine through several upgrades and works fine on most iPhone 4s, but this bug killed the sound. Its also killed the sound on many iPhone 4S and iPad 2s. The hardware isn't the problem.

I'm elligible for an upgrade in a week or so, so I will be getting a new iPhone 5, but I have plans for this iPhone 4 so I'll be awating a fix which I'm sure will eventually come.
