Transferring files to a portable hard drive?

I have a portable hard drive that was originally formatted for my old Windows PC.

I can transfer files from it to my MacBook Pro but can't move files from my MacBook Pro to the portable hard drive.

Is there any way I can move files to the portable hard drive, or would I need to reformat it for my Mac and therefore, presumably, would wipe the files?
