more songs in icloud than on my mac

This might mean that there are songs that you purchases and downloaded from iTunes, then deleted from your Mac.

Try this:

1. View --> Show Music Not On This Computer
2. Look for songs that are grayed out - those are songs that you purchased via iTunes but subsequently deleted from your computer.
