Q: iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

iPhone 5, iOS 6

What do people recommend on how to test the new phone at the Apple Store? Should I take my own secure router? Any way to check the chip manufacturer before the phone box is open?

    stuart,

go in your preferences and select the network where you are connected and change your dns settings typing 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

    will work.

Thanks, Braccobaldo! I didn't think to change the DNS settings (to Google, no less) but it's worked here at the office. We'll see what happens when I get home.

Much better now....17 down, 5 up.

    Thanks again!

    Shaddow,

I'm a network engineer and deal with a lot different issues on a daily.  It smelled like what I've seen with overly aggressive network scanning over multiple ports.  The symptoms are about the same, over time the responsive of the scanned hardware deteoriates over time until usually a reboot will flush the cache.  Unfortunately I haven't found a real way to completely shutdown and reboot the Iphone.

Most of the apple posts that I've read were calling out iCloud sync issues and one even mentioned that Wireless N router need to have media sharing enabled.  On my phone I disabled iCloud a long time ago as I never received what expected as a benefit.  The only other full time app that was running on my iOS was home sharing.

Home sharing worked fine before the upgrade and so did every other app on my phone.  I eliminated the installed apps as a problem since I haven't updated them so their basic programming wouldn't have changed.  Homesharing is built into the iOS and therefore its programming can change via update.

Since I have turned off home sharing my phone is ultra responsive.  Siri has been on the spot everytime and my emails are syncing perfectly. I'll let you know if it goes south again.

Great Sadness. Less than 45 minutes later the DNS change is no longer working its magic. I'm back down to sub-par performance.

I'll still try this on my home network but I think I'll be calling Apple Service and filing an official issue.

    Still, thank you!

I am a network engineer myself. Well so far so good on disabling homesharing myself (didnt need to reboot the phone when I got home at lunch to get wireless working). I'll see again when I get home in a couple of hours. I never noticed any problem on my phone as far as lag, but it is an iphone 5, anything would feel faster than my iphone4.

I am having the same connectivity issues since updating my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S to iOs 6.  Seems reseting things and changing settings does not provide a permanent fix.  Has Apple acknowledged this issue?  Is there a real fix to this?

OK, new iphone user here and having the same ip5 wi-fi problems as everyone else, dropped connections, slow connections, short battery life (even though only LIGHT usage). Apparently there is also a glitch where even if you are connected to wi-fi, the phone is using 4G instead of wi-fi. Better check my data usage ! .....Thinking of giving the ip5 to my wife and going back to my crappy work-provided blackberry. I've had tons of issues like this dealing w/ Windows and heard how Apple 'just works'. Know I'll get flamed for this, but these problems and the need for this comment thread looks like something I would expect from Windows, not Apple. Please tell me I'm wrong.

    Stephen,

Don't lose complete faith.  I am not an apple disciple either but my 4s worked flawlessly until I updated to the iphone 5 OS (iOS6).  My direct beef with apple is its enclosed self serving model which only allows to fully control the experience on the hardware and software side.  Luckily for them that has made them a pretty safe bet from a home user perspective until now.  This is a lot of questionable media for the mothership to explain.  Everyone is entitled to a glitchy release, it is how the manufacturer addresses it that builds confidence.  Unfortunately Apple is not addressing anything.

Can't wait for my surface tablet .

I have posted this on another thread...

Another relatively easy solution to try for those users who are still having problems...

I just received and activated my iPhone 5 yesterday only to find that it would not connect to my time capsule router at home. Two Mac laptops, two iphone 4's, and two iPad 3's (all on iOS 6) had no problems connecting to this router which has WPA2 and Mac Address Filtering enabled and SSID broadcasting disabled.

This morning I went into work and the iPhone could recognize my work's wifi network. I went into the local Apple Store to talk to a Genius and he was able to get the iphone talking to the Apple Store wifi (both secured and open networks). [NOTE: I even tried the iphone 30 feet away from the store in the parking lot and was able to connect.]

The Genius recommended I bring my time capsule in so that they could troubleshoot the wireless connection between both devices. I went home, and, being the problem-solving type, I systematically disabled the security settings on my time capsule (one-by one) and found out that the Mac Address Filtering was preventing me from connecting to my time capsule. I disbled this security setting and my iphone 5 has been stably connecting to the time capsule with no degradation of speed all afternoon.

Bottom line: My router has WPA2 enabled and does not broadcast the SSID. The Mac Address Filtering is DISABLED. With these settings my iPhone connects to wifi without issue...

I appreciate the reply and agree that any manufacturer can have a problem. Also agree that it's how they handle it, not the fact that it happened. Thanks, I will hang in there, but it is not something I expected to encounter.

I realise this may not be to eveyones liking but after beleiving I may have solved these wifi dropouts with changing settings on the handset and on my router, sure enough it started happening again!

I then refused to leave the apple store yesterday without a new handset! I was given a new iPhone 5 and am happy to report ABSOLUTELY NO WiFi dropping!!

Obviously I cannot speak for everyone here but for me, looks like it was definately a hardware issue!

For the money we are paying for these 'New' phones, we should not have to try 'Fixing' them!

I have had iPhones since the very first one and this is the first time i've ever had a harware problem! A **** shame!

scott could you please keep updating your experiences over the next few days.

my particular issue is not with connecting itself, but the slow connection instead.

if you have the speedtest app it would be great to run a few of those as well; against another machine that you know is stable preferrably.

good luck! i hope we all get our issues fixed.
