Q: iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

iPhone 5, iOS 6

Same issues and same start of mac address, but I don't know if that really means anything. One you list with the same mac address is working fine. I imagine they issue unique addresses in sequence, as the radio chips come off the press.

Hi brncofan7 : I think i've had my fair share of posts on this thread and others about WiFi issues on Iphone 4S, Iphone 5, ipads etc that im simply sitting back now.

i'd like to think everyone of these posts would of done the simple things such as the resets, wipe the phone and resets etc.

Aside from the Verizon issue of data traffic, the main stream problem still resides with the encyption connectivity process that drives the hardware on the phone via mac-address or otherwise to any given Wifi device thats on the market.

My Iphone 4S upgrade to IOS6 wouldnt event accept my key code for WiFi, couldnt event make a connect.

I had to downgrade my firmware on my WiFi device and connectivity was back to normal.

If you manage to get a replacement Iphone 5 due to connectivity or other issues based on the resembling mac address range, then its a positive achievement

If not, and provided you've tweaked around with all network encrypryption variations your WiFi device can handle, then you next option is to upgrade/downgrade firmware. need to speak to WiFi product vendor for support

if you dont want to do that, then wait for a patch update from Apple, who knows when this will happen

if you dont want to do that, then buy a new wifi device and try your luck, maybe your wifi device needs to be more modernised

its possible the WiFi standards between various vendors and the Apple devices in general... The interpretations of WiFi 802 standards could cause connectivity issues with respect to authentication and other connection issues.

Check Wi Fi site to see if your WiFi device is certified:

    http://certifications.wi-fi.org/search_products.php

Alot of IF's in this post

Im simply accepting downgrading firmware on my WiFi device as opposed to screaming for a new Iphone 4S which i doubt will happen for me

Thanks Shanon, I've done everything *except* for an iOS reload/restore, not sure why I've skipped that one.  Had 2 wifi routers at home already, have upgraded/downgraded firmware on them, done everything with security, etc.,  and even bought a new router (Apple Extreme) just playing around to see if it might have been a saturation/contention issue (have 18 wireless devices in the home).

I'll give the reload a shot tonight just for kicks and grins, otherwise it's feeling like it's time to grab some popcorn, sit back and wait to see if Apple can resolve via a 6.0.1 patch.

    Thanks ... Dan

As for your Apple Extreme, check if the model meets the WiFi Standards and if theres any firmware updates for it

    http://certifications.wi-fi.org/search_products.php?search=1&advanced=1&lang=en& filter_company_id=5&filter_category_id=&filter_subcategory=&filter_cid=&date_fro m=&date_to=&x=44&y=10

Also the same goes for your two WiFi routers. As these days, devices are moving more closer to "standards", this is where part of the communication problem is happening, whether its new/old devices; The intrepretations of standards between WiFi Vendors and Apple are causing things to break. It all comes down to how software / code is written to drive the physical means of communicating data between apple devices and WiFi vendors products.

Here's a question that has just come to mind for everone. If the Iphone 4/5 possibly more so the 5's as people are getting replacements; Is the phone "physically" faulty ?, i mean it would be a "fault" if the hardware doesnt broadcase any signal from the phone.

If it does display a means of attempting to communicate for any number of reasons, whether out of the box, or software update, does this still mean the device is physically faulty or the software/code driving the device is faulty ? If thats the cause, its up to a WiFi's Vendor and Apple to get together and find out why certain Apple devices work and others dont ?

Hi everyone! Just got my iPhone 5, and yep, wi-fi is extemely slow. But I googled and that thing helped me:

    1) Open settings, go to Wi-Fi

    2) Connect to ur Wi-Fi

    3) Tap blue circle with arrow near ur Wi-Fi name. Find DNS and put there 8.8.8.8 (100% safety, its google's server)

Worked for me. Now my wi-fi perfect.

(maybe someone already posted this here, 107 pages too much to serf)

DNS has nothing to do with transfer speeds per se.

After talking to Apple Call Center for one and two days I've carried out some of their advice, including resetting network settings, and doing a full reinstall of the OS. Nothing helps. So now they want to replace/repair my device, but it's gonna take them something like a week and during that time I will be without device, they say. In order to still have a device during this time, they urge me to go to my carrier shop where I got the device and ask if they can lend me another one until mine is back from repair.

This is the reply I got from Apple Call Center here in Japan.

    Ridiculous.

I'm going to Apple Store today to talk to someone directly... (btw I'm a full time iOS app developer, I can't be without a device).)

"DNS has nothing to do with transfer speeds per se."

Why? It's really worked for me. I think its OS6 bug.

For some people, who has hardware issues it wont help.

    Jonny....

I would recommend going to the Apple Store if you are able to.  Keep in mind that the stores will receive shipments usually on a daily basis. I went to my Apple Store over an hour away and I was advised they would be replacing my unit based on the problems I was having. I was told it would take 3 to 5 business days.... I got an email the very next day around 4pm saying my replacement has arrived.  So just because they say your replacement may be a week doesn't mean that is how long it will take. Apple isn't going to tell you the next day and if for some reason it didn't come in, have you all upset once again.  They are going to give you several days of play and if it arrives sooner you will be even much more happier.  Just like when Apple emails you and tells you that your new iPhone shipment has just been moved up by a week :)  Got to love those kinds of notices.  I was tickled to get notification of my replacement being in the next day. I think in all Apple is just awesome and they will try to make a wrong thing right. At least that has been my experience.

iNikel, I believe is correct..... as I have been stating.... it appears that there are hardware and software issues with iPhone 5.  My iPhone 5 has IOS6 issues just like my iPad 3 which I updated to IOS6 where my download speeds are averaging 0.4 mb download speeds when other devices download speeds of 22mb.  I never had WIFI issues with my iPad at home or when traveling until IOS6. I also still have an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 that are still on 5.1.1 and are working flawlessly.

But I am also experiencing faulty hardware. I can't even keep a full signal (3 bars) inside an Apple store LOL and I'm staring at all the other devices on the tables with full bars including the Genius Bar Rep who pulled his own iPhone 5 out and had full bars. Mine were jumping all over the place from 3 bars down to 1. I would lose connection completely with my router at 15ft away yet if I stood there in the same spot, my WIFI would come back and change from 1 bar back to 3 and so forth.  It's not my router signal.  I have a PS3 and Xbox, and iPhone 4, iPad 2 and iPad 3 (ios6) and I get up to 40ft + distances with them and still capable of streaming Netflix. I get nothing but hiccups and pauses with my iPhone 5 and loss of wifi connection.

It's obvious that iPhone 5 and WIFI routers are having a difficult time understanding each other in more ways than one.

Bingo. Two words: WEAK ANTENNA. I can't get ANY cell signal inside my work (which is where I really NEED it), and I have never been able to pull the full 5 AT&T bars on my iPhone 5 -- anywhere -- even outside. I usually only get 3. I can get only 2 bars on WiFi signal if I am one room away from my router, but if I go into the kitchen, it loses the signal. I can, however get it from the second story room that is DIRECTLY above my router. You would have thought Apple learned it's lesson from the signal issue on the iPhone 4...

Kimberly my cell reception is stronger than my iphone 4. Just the Wifi part appears to be weak in my iphone 5.  I have not had any problems with cellular reception. That may be the case with your phone and I would contact Apple Support or Genius Bar for your case.

I have a replacement coming so I'll let everyone know how it works. The funny thing is that it worked perfect for 1 week. The body got hot one day and after that, things went wacky. I wish I would have waited to buy -- my gut told me I should -- but I didn't . If this phone doesn't work, I think I'll replace it with a 4s.

There's an echo in this room. I got my replacement iPhone5 from Apple on Monday. Exchanged the SIM card, synced the phone, WiFi worked for about 60 seconds. Another little issue, the Home button on the new unit is loose. I have a call in to the "Advisor" I spoke with last week who was quite understanding and helpful. I've also emailed him with extra information: the serial number on the new unit is VERY close to the SN on my original unit yet the WiFi MAC address is quite different. I'll be expecting Apple to exchange the phone until I get one that works. If that doesn't happen I'll insist on a return. Problem is, since I've paid the contract extension fee already, getting a subsidized phone of a different model or make will be nearly impossible. Though I'm not fond of the idea, maybe Apple will send me a 4s.

    Hog tied by technology. ugh.

I had issues with my iphone 5 and had the Apple store replace it. I then experienced similar issues with the new phone so I decided to troubleshoot what was going on. I followed some users advice in the forums and really found it to be helpful so I will repeat the steps I took to iron out my issues.

I erased the phone completely, thenset the phone up as a new phone completely through the process till it completes. Once that is done I restored from a backup I had on my macbook pro. It has been working great.

I don't believe replacing the hardware right now was the thing that solved it.

My replacement phone also has a 54:26:... address. Same problems. I'll be interested in hearing how your new one works!
