Q: iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

iPhone 5, iOS 6

For what it's worth, I've tried a few of the other suggestions to no avail.

    • No difference in performance on 2.4GHz range or 5GHz range
    • The "reset network settings" then "toggle wifi off for 10-15 seconds" did nothing either

At this point I think I'm just going to wait until 6.1 is released and hope that it fixes the problem. If not, I guess I'll be getting my 3rd iPhone.

I bought my ip5 at AT&T last week and am having the same issues. Has anyone tried a DFU Restore?

Not that I've seen on here. That made me think of something else - as I understand the iPhone 5 has yet to be "officially" jailbroken. When it is - that would seem to be a pretty good test to eliminate software as the issue.

To follow up on my previous post, my replacement ip5 works well with my work wifi.  Now, I can move forward with my other stuff and no need to worry about this issue anymore.

I thought I had mine figured out (3rd phone), but whats happening is its switching to LTE, then going back to showing the wifi signal but its still using LTE.  If I shut off cellular data the strem stops and goes back to WiFi acting up.  I wouldnt even have known except it used 40% of the battery streaming audio for an hour.

I am aware of the Veryzon iphones doing this, but I have AT&T.

To add to the above post it appears its an app issue that is not switching back to WiFi after it is back in range, tried another streaming app and it switches back to WiFi from LTE after its back in range.

it has nothing to do with the carriers. its a glitch in the OS, by design or otherwise.

I "think" I see some of these same issues with an IPad Mini.
I have an IPad 3rd Gen and an IPhone 4S (both with 6.0.1) in which doesn't seem to have any issues.

Although I have not activated cellular data on my Mini, I would set my crosshairs on my carrier.
If say, ATT had a bunch of users demanding that they be re-embursed for the unknowingly excessive data usage, then they would turn to Apple with some question.

Apple may or maynot listen to their users, but they surely will listen to the carriers.

Well, I have an AirPort Extreme, most recent version with the latest firmware updates and I'm still having problems with WiFi and my iPhone 5. My other Apple devices are fine, just the iP5. I've changed the SSID name, the channel, the, well, everything. One at a time and in various groupings. The 5 Mhz setting solved the problem for about 5 minutes, then I was back to 0.5 Mbps down. Oddly, my upload speeds are much better.... sometimes as good as 3 or 4 Mbps.

I realize that there are many variables but as I've noted in some of my posts, I'm basically using the same setup and I'm having the same issues. What is especially odd - as you noted - is that upload speeds are still very good.

Curious - what are you using for testing the speeds? I found with my AirPort Extreme and my iPhone 5 I was showing completely unrealistic downloads using the Speedtest.net iOS App when everything else was crawling. In the neighborhood of 40-70Mbps download when I know for a fact the BEST I can expect from my ISP is around 20Mbps (I'm not complaining - I just know there's no way I'd get double to triple my normal speed).

It's rather (painfully) obvious that this is really going nowhere but I realized that with a plethora of speed test sites and apps, it was probably better to do a test that could be easier to compare.

    First, my basic setup:

    • Charter Cable Internet - 15Mbps Service
    • Apple AirPort Extreme 5th Generation with latest firmware (7.6.1)
    • Completely reset the router - using WPA2 Protection

I did a test downloading the same podcast file (~23MB file; 57:18 in length)

    1. 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 iMac (2.7GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB, OS X 10.8.2) - took less than a minute (I'd say approximately 15-30 seconds.)
    2. iPhone 5 - Verizon - 16GB, White (Wi-Fi Address starts with 04:F7:E4) - took approximately 7-8 minutes.

Keep in mind, this is my replacement phone to fix the problem. Part of me thinks maybe I should just wait for 6.1 to officially be released in case that is in fact the fix. Part of me says I'll keep asking for replacements until I get a working phone.

So you got a replacement, and it also has the same issue? I have two iPhone 5's that I ordered at the same time, and both have this issue too. Makes me wonder whether getting replacements would be helpful at all.

On the other hand, I can't believe that all the people who use the same WiFi network that I am using on my university campus have this issue, so I'm thinking that there must be some phones that don't have the issue.

btw, your issue seems to be exactly identical to mine. My upload speeds also remain good when the download speeds get worse.

Yeah, it does - no change at all. I've reset my router and no help. I've also noticed that my wife's iPhone 4S which is also running iOS 6.0.1 is having the same problem as well as my son's iPod Touch (4th Gen) running iOS 6.0.1. That would make it seem obvious that it's a software issue however our 3rd Gen iPad Wi-Fi is also running iOS 6.0.1 and seems to be working fine. If there's one thing I've learned in reading through many of these posts is that there is no real consistency. Some people are getting new iPhone 5's and reporting the problem fixed. Others are saying their iPod Touch's and iPhone 4S's have never had any problems.

My only thought in pushing for another replacement - even if it doesn't fix the problem - is so this gets even a little more attention through Apple's support channels.

On the other hand, I can't believe that all the people who use the same WiFi network that I am using on my university campus have this issue, so I'm thinking that there must be some phones that don't have the issue.

That's what's most frustrating about this. It seems - from the posts - that it's not just one problem. It appears as though it's a combination between hardware (guessing several different Wi-Fi chips/cards being used in the phones and perhaps other hardware) and some bug(s) in iOS 6.

In my case, everything I'm running is Apple which I'd think would resolve any router/device conflicts or incompatibility.

I agree. Honestly, as a consumer, we should not have to guess at this. The device should just work on all wifi routers no matter what software. If apple thinks that router manufactures suppose to cater to them, they are screwing the consumer. Some say when they go into the applestore, their wifi is blazing fast because it is an apple router. This is not right. I am not going to buy another router so I can have faster speeds on my phone. That is ridiculous!

solved my home wifi by moving my router in my room & only use my iPhone 5 while I'm in this room...My wifi still ***** at my work and pretty much where ever else I go.  I'm waiting to see if the 6.02 or 6.1 update does anything.

Has anyone experienced not getting voicemail alerts? My girlfriend & I are both having this problem now.  It happens when our phones are off & when they are on.  I actually got an alert that I have a voicemail 2.5 hours after she left it.
