Apple acknowledges issue and sends a fix to Verizon users phones!

New Knowledge Base for this even.

That is good news for Verizon but does not address AT&T. Also, Verizon's issue was a different problem from what I understand. It had to do with using cellular data while showing wifi connection. Some of us are having wifi router drop off issues at home.

My replacement arrived and works perfectly with WPA/WPA2 so my problem was a hardware one.

I asked about this last night (I'm on ATT) and 1 Verizon user answered & said it didn't work. It sounds like Verizon had a fit about the network congestion and Apple threw something together stopgap. It probably just disconnects your phone completely LOL

But that was just 1 person. I'd be interested to hear from other Verizon users as this update rolls out.

As far as entering your network stuff manually - that, like anything else, only works a couple minutes for me (I imagine until the phone tries to reauthenticate with the WAP). This period of time it takes to try and handshake again probably varies a lot, accounting for the varying reports of success with all these "reset stuff and/or manually enter something" fixes. If any of these have worked for more than 48 hours my guess is you didn't have this same problem to begin with.

From my reading of this thread, and there's been some excellent research posted in here, the most stubborn variety of this disease is around how the phone handles authentication with an encrypted network.

I've had a week of this fun. Looks like a lovely day to visit the Apple store, receipt in hand.

I understand. This is at least a beginning that shows they are looking into the issues. There may be an AT&T fix out too that I haven't seen. You can try going to Settings > about and see if a carrier fix pops up for AT&T like the one for verizon. It may be there and if so may fix.

Wifi dropout was causing a lot of us to rack up data charges so this is great news  for at least one of many issues as far as I believe. I realize there are other hurdles as well and hope there are other fixes announced soon.

I find comfort at least knowing Apple acknowledges wif issues and are working on them.

My iPhone 5 will not sustain wifi connectivity to any network.  My iPad 3 has the same issue since updating to iOS6.  BIG problem.  Please fix!!!

I'd be interested in why it would be trying to re-authenticate?

I got my IP5 September 21. My carrier is AT&T. I started noticing slow speed while downloading apps, so i decided to test my connection speed (while connected to my home wifi). I used the app. I was getting on average .3-.4 megs. I usually get between 18 & 24. So I call my ISP, go through all the usuals, resetting modem, router and all. Each time would re-test from one of my other computers in the house and would test fine. Finally had a tech come out and replace my modem after checking the signal in the cable line. I even replaced my router with a different. Finally I started to realize everything else was working fine, and that the problem was in my phone. I tested on a friends wifi network and got the same results. I tested at work and got the same results. Called Apple care and after several phone conversations, a restore and all that mess, a senior adviser recommended a replacement. My wife drove 2 hours to the closest Apple store to h ave this done. They checked it there and it worked fine according to them and did not want to replace it. After arguing with them and providing the case number with the senior adviser's recommendation they replaced the phone... supposedly. My wife put a little note in the reminder app on the way. When she got said "replacement" all the texts and call history was gone but that lil note was still there. So the arguing ensued again and they finally replaced the phone while that one stayed on the counter in sight of my wife. So, I get off work, go home and get my new phone... Same problem. I get on here and go to reading, all the while trying various fixes that I have not previously tried. Nothing. I go back into the app store and download every available speed test app i can find and start trying them. On about 50% of them it was showing to be working at proper speeds. I go back to the app and change the server. The one it defaults to is out of Memphis and hosted by Comcast. I change to one out of Little Rock hosted by Southwest Arkansas Telephone and it tests out and proper speeds.... Not sure what this tell me but it does seem odd. I have an IP4S, which my wife is using now, and it tests at proper speeds (again, 18-24 megs) on both servers, using the same app. I noticed the speed on my IP5 seems to be ok while using Safari or other apps, such as Facebook, but really crappy on others like youtube or the App store. Really confusing, but if i can not come up with a solution before my return deadline, I definitely know what i will be doing. Don't get me wrong, I love the phone, but my cell service is not all that great at my house and I rely very heavily on my wifi connection, so without it my phone is almost useless.

    Interesting! Good catch!

You should go to settings then general scroll down to reset then click on reset and select network settings .  Just tried this and it seems to have helped.  I have had connection issues with my iPhone5 and WIFI since I got it last week. Will update after a few hours if the problem has resloved.

I had an issue with WiFi but it seems to have disappeared which is just weird

Using iPhone 5 with ATT for cellular and a 100Mbits home network WiFi.

Although WiFi issue is gone, I am primarily using LTE which is still a LOT faster than my home WiFi.

WiFi gets around 10-15Mbits down and LTE gets around 30-40Mbits down.

In my case this didn't help, but it's an easy thing to try just in case that is the issue.

Re: reauthentication. I don't think it should be unless you have a really short timeout of some sort set on your router.

A few zillion letters back someone looking at network logs saw the iPhone was very frequently reauthenticating, like every minute or so. So this is not first hand knowlege I should say. But it's the best theory I've heard so far.

It fits my symptoms, works on the network open, but not with any security type. (Some folks have said TKIP works for them, but my Apple WAPs don't have that as a setting, so I haven't tried it.)

Appt at Apple Store for 2 pm.

Out of the blue I'm getting proper home WiFi speeds on my iPhone 5.  I hope my speed testing app is accurate.
