Activate unlocked iPhone5 with no SIM?

Is it possible to activate over WiFi without a SIM?

Just got an officially-unlocked iPhone 5 direct from Apple UK. Don't yet have a SIM card for it. The wizard successfully connects to my WiFi network, then it seems to attempt activation. Then it says "Failed", and suggests inserting a SIM.

Are the activation servers overloaded? Or is a SIM card always needed?

Thanks!

PS: it's annoying that an officially unlocked handset needs activation at all. If I pay full price instead of getting a operator contract subsidy, then IMHO it should just work.

No it's not obvious when you buy it directly through the apple store app. It isn't stated clearly that an original activation requires a sim... It's a reasonable assumption that you can use it via wireless or activate it through iTunes.

The issue is that it should be stated clearly not something one has to investigate to determine. It's a simple issue of telling the consumer up front, not leaving it as something an average busy professional person has to work out after they buy it.

And sure it's a phone but isn't it supposed to be so much more than that - isn't that kind of the point of its marketing?

Honestly, i just DO NOT see the problem in cutting your micro sim down to nano sim size. It isn't that hard. And yeah before anyone points out that a nano sim is thinner than a micro sim, it's been tested and it fits regardless of how thick it is!

I'm stuck atm in asia not back for the next couple of months, so to use my sim here (which i cut myself to make it fit my i4) i'll just cut it down some more and wait 'til next week when my dad flies across from england with my i5!

It WORKS. No need to wait for it to arrive in stock and no need to wait again further for your number to transfer over to the new sim.

Erm it depends on the size of the actual chip. Is the chip the bigger one or the slightly newer smaller chip (mini sim) ones?

If your standard full-size sim is the slightly newer mini sim (smaller sized chip) then you can cut it up down to nano!

They have some very helpful pics to help you trim your existing sim down!
